Now I Know, Thus You Know

Have you ever asked yourself these questions?

Frustrated, tired, can't think properly, forgetful. Turning on wrong burners, setting kitchens on fire. On an on... then I received a news letter from Web MD with the article titled, What to expect in your 70's.

I am well past 70, only 5 months from 78.

Quick summary of what I learned. Well, just delete Quick.  We know I am not.

Life in your 70's, not in THE 70's, YOUR 70's.

Some changes in your 70s are universal,

Experts sometimes call this “pure aging.”

Shifts happen, 😋

If we live long enough, 😋

Your Mind!

The brain shrinks, signals from different areas to your brain, Slow Down, multitask is harder,

 attention span gets shorter.

Your Heart

After 70 your heart can’t beat as fast during exercise or when you’re stressed.

The heart walls get thicker, valves get stiffer. Blood may not flow through as efficiently.

The heart’s electrical system may start to glitch, which can cause an irregular heartbeat.
Plaque builds in veins.  (plagues come and stay)

Your Skin

Age spots and wrinkles appear. Skin bruises more, you sweat less.

Skin dries, feels like paper. Itchy, easily irritated.

Nutrition

Your metabolism slows

.We gain or spread out, we don't drink enough water because the body doesn't tell us we are thirsty.

1 in 4 women -- and some men, too -- over 65 have osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease. Your muscles get weaker, and the tendons -- which connect muscles to your skeleton -- get stiffer.
(sit for and hour and try to get up)

We have a decrease in strength, flexibility.

In your 70's, you might lose an inch or two off your height as disks in your back flatten. .

(2 of my inches are GONE)

Your Sleep

you either sleep to much, or not at all, or sleep with many wakeups. Sleep patterns change.

Your Immune System

Your body’s defenses lose a step in your 70s, which leaves you more vulnerable to illness.

Vaccines don’t work as well as they once did for you, we are more susceptible to infection and viruses

Your Digestive System

Your stomach lining is more fragile. your digestive system doesn't move the food as well as it did.

Constipation comes, or the opposite.

 Urinary Tract

Your bladder can’t hold as much as it once did, and your muscles that support it lose strength.

more trips to the bathroom or not enough trips.

(leakage happens)

Your Vision

Your pupils react more slowly to changes in light
eye muscles weaken
it takes more time for eyes to adjust from bright to dark or vice versa
fine details are to to see because there are fewer cells to send messages to your brain that tells it what to do
lens thicken, makes it harder to see in dim lighting, colors are less vibrant.

Your Ears

certain sounds can't be heard

hard to understand what others are saying.

Background noise also can interfere more with your conversations.

Depressed yet? Hang in there. I have always said humans have expiration dates, just like merchandise and products... Now I know MINE is rapidly approaching since Every single one of the above mentions I HAVE in my 70's. (I will cancel WebMd news letters before I reach 80.
There is nothing wrong with me, I am just IN MY 70's!
I AM NORMAL! 😎
UPDATE AFTER 9 COMMENTS.
This is not scary, it is comforting to me. When I read it, I thought so I am not alone, this is supposed to happen, I am not going crazy or getting ill.

This is all awful! Reading it, it seems like it is miraculous that we continue to blog, learn, and function! But you are young at heart and not not near this bad, because you continue to learn and create. I get the same WebMed e-mails. I actually saw this one, but didn't read it.

Yep that sounds like me. It is depressing. Growing old is not for sissies.

I read a long time ago that for some people the 70s are the happiest times of their lives. I would say it was true for me, but I'm now 81 and at the moment I'm extremely happy because I'm learning a lot about things I want to know. It varies with individuals.

Hello,

I get the same WedMd emails too. I guess some things we are better off not knowing. Live each day and enjoy your life while you can. Growing old is not fun, we can not stop aging.
Take care, enjoy your day!

I am not 70 but I notice some of these...one is that i have less strength.

That's all rather scary

How depressing, but glad it assured you that it's normal at least - getting old sucks but it's better than the alternative!

As the old saying goes, knowledge is power. We should stay in tuned to our body. I have found myself saying I used to be able....then I tell myself...you've never been this age.

They fall apart in my family early and few reach their 70s. *sigh* But...it's good to know these things are "just part of aging." Our bodies seem to go through "heck" on both ends of the aging spectrum. I remember "growing pains" in my legs, confusion, oh all the trials of "growing up" and now, it's like the body is "undoing" all the progress with strange and painful changes on the other side of the bell curve!

Yep. I, too, identify with every stinkin' one of these. I'm not eligible for another bone-density scan 'til December, but when I told my Primary yesterday how I'm feeling she's sending me for x-rays next week.
But! Like you've said, it's comforting to know I'm not a lone ranger.
And hey. My body may be going to pot, but I'm more at peace with myself. As Ann Voskamp writes, I'm no Longer rushing through life as if it were an emergency.
Thanks for sharing these excerpts!

You are normal girl and smart the way you keep up with things.
Although something we all need to think about - death is part of the journey of life.

Yup...I'm right there with you!
I like being "normal" for my age.
I have everyone of those too.
I'm just in the maybe last season of my life and I sure want to go out with a BANG...
Life...keep on coming...
It may be slower but that's the way it is.
78 in November...

I sure have seen more changes since getting into my 70s...things happening that NEVER happened before! I've always been healthy so I'm blessed I know but everything seems to be wearing out. And guess what...nothing we can do about THAT! Try to smile and stay positive and support and encourage each other...how about that? Hugs!!!

I'm a week from 81 and I can tell you that you've only touched the surface. I mean there's . . . oh, heck, I forget. 😁

I am only in my early 70s, but I have noticed some changes. I can’t say I love them, but I will embrace getting older and just make the best at wherever I am.

I'm right there with you! It's unrealistic to think we can maintain our bodies and they will forever be '30 somethings!' Best to know what we are dealing with and - you know me - I LOVE all things 'normal!' So we will be normal together!

I haven't yet suffered from most of these things. Thin skin, yes. It's realy awful. My legs are getting weaker because I don't walk enough. You have inspired me to walk and the dogs and I do most days, but still not enough. My heart is great says the cardiologist, Fiber One keeps things moving. My mind has issues: I can't remember names of celebrities and other well known people. I'm still good with people I actually know. I also can't remember words sometimes and losing words is what scares me the most. There I am with a big gap in my brain. Very scary, but you just have to go with it. I worry about some things, but not ageing. Thanks for taking the time to share all the good and comforting information.

Being considered normal in certain age categories may be somewhat comforting as there is strength in numbers. While those statistics may be true in many areas, there are many people who would simply sit back and let life happen without taking steps to keep their mind or body active. You, Sandra, are definitely NOT in that group and many of your fellow bloggers are the same!

Betty Manousos said...

hello Sandra, i couldn't agree more with Ginny's comment.

you're definitely not in that group.
i am feeling a little worried about aging. growing old i have noticed some changes such as waking up many times in the middle of the night, my vision is a bit blurry especially at night.
i so love this powerful quote. “Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.” –David Bowie

thanks for sharing WedMd site.

Because I've been so stressed lately I did find this scary because my body has changed so much in the last 3 months since I got sick. I don't want more change!
