School Memories

This Photo is of Wallen Hall, SCAD University in Savannah GA . the photo is from their website.
My 1st day of school was spent in the bottom left corner behind that tree that was not there in 1949.
the school was old and ugly back then.
At that time it was called, 37th Street Elementary School for the entire city of Savannah.
I found my 12 years of school photos, while cleaning out The Cabinet last week

On Myra;s blog, Respice, Prospice, she wrote the below statement. Pop over and read her post for details and a lot of fun.
Selfies.  Lots of people have lots of opinions ..... and that's okay.  Personally I'm a fan -- on account inside me still lives the self-conscious adolescent who'd have given a month's allowance for one flattering photograph.  Just one.

I spent all 12 years of school despising the way I looked, I was overweight and thought I was HUGE.
. I wanted just one good photo.
LOOKING Back with 70 more years of LIFE, I realize the majority of girls looked just like me.
In 1945 Perms came out and were all the rage, my mother was only 23 and I was 4. When she permed her hair she permed mine.

My hair was straight as a board, and as you can see, it frizzed and did not curl.
the frizz except for 4th grade natural pig tails.

The thing is, I finlly got a good photo when a professional took my
engagement Photo for the news paper.
AND IT TOOK ME until now at age 76, to realize it.
Thank you Myra, for making me realize I did get a photo that I loved.

1963 and yes, it was black and white

Also thank you Myra for telling me about NEW SOFTWARE on LINE that removes back ground FREE. Remove Background from Image – remove.bg I used there photo and not a colored one because it looked weird.

Caturday Art background removed and new one added from
Remove BG

Both of these were done in PicMonkey, I added a little color below

You were cute as a button, but didn't know it. At that age, most of us are so self concious, and critical of our looks. You look like a model in your engagement photo!

I agree with Ginny, cute as a button! You still are.

we love the photos.. and if I were your class mate that time I would have picked you as my best friend, that's for sure ...

This is scary but as a child you could be a doppelganger for F's cousin Erica. What F wouldn't have given for a hair perm at some stage of growing up - hers is poker straight (which she now realizes is a blank palette if you want to change hairstyles, but as a kid made for some very ugly school photos.) We will go and visit Myra, but suspect that unlike her the lack of any flattering photographs generated a belief that there were none to be had and selfies would only make the situation worse. (BTW a professional photographer once told F to view your own photos in a mirror. Few of us are symmetrical, and are used to seeing our own faces in reverse. Photos show us what other people see and they look odd to us - hold your photos up to a mirror and see how you feel about them.)

Love all your school pictures and that last one is fantastic. I remember all through school hating the way I looked and thinking I was fat. When I look back at those pictures now I realize how wrong I was.

I like what you did with your engagement photo, but I must be honest & say the original is best.

Hello,

That is a great photo of you! The edited images are artsy. I like the original photo.
I had perms in my younger years and dyed my hair dark. I have thin super straight hair, it does not hold a curl. Have a great day!

Ugh... school photos - designed to demonstrate to all and sundry how they might look if they ever got caught and had prisoner mugshots... I second Ginny's comment. YAM xx

You were adorable and you still are! I loved seeing all your old school photos and the engagement photo really is very pretty. I was always self conscious and thought I was fat all through school too. Middle school was the worst - fat and awkward! I didn't get comfortable with myself until I was in my 20s and then went backwards again in my 50s. I refuse to be in photos now!

Nice art! I've played around with Remove BG since Myra posted it too.

What a delightful surprise to see your creations! Seriously, you were stunning. As in, a 50's movie star -- can't think of the name right now. Maybe Ava Gardner ... Bob, can you help out? Anyway! Back when stars looked like women, not an Olson twin.

Your grade school pix make me smile. My favorites are Grades 3 and 5.

Oh- I hear you and identify! It's just sad how hard we were on our younger selves. I, too, had those TONI perms and I can still smell that ammonia scent as the little rubber curlers were soaked through to the paper that was used to corral the hair into submission. lol. xo Diana

What a fun flashback. All the big hair, for the most part I was ok with all my school pictures EXCEPT the one where my mom decided I needed my bangs trimmed before picture day in 2nd. She obviously used very dull scissors

That really is a beautiful photo. I think we are all so critical of the way we looked through the years. Hair was a real challenge back then. How many times I slept in curlers! lol

Absolutely love your engagement photo.
It reminds me of my senior high school photo with that black velvet drape.
I never liked most of my school photos..the photographer never cared if our hair was neat or the clothes were crooked.
One of these days I will have to hunt up my school pictures too.
Thanks for sharing.

I really like how you have pictures of yourself all the way through school and YES, I felt the exact same way growing up. Now, when I look back...well, I still don't like them that much LOL!

You were and are a beautiful lady. I enjoyed this post with your school photos and all those great tips too. I was thinking yesterday that actresses like Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield would be considered overweight by today's standards. I didn't like my body image when I was young, thinking I was overweight, and I am more so now and am more at peace with myself. It's all relative!

We think all the photos are wonderful; just think of all the memories they hold. The engagement photo is lovely. Mom has super duper natural curly hair and many days she wishes it were straighter. No one is ever satisfied with how they looke:(

I love this, I must find mine and post. I like the bottom left one best I think. From grades 1,2,3. You look like a little flirt in it. I so hated the way I looked too. I was tall and so, so skinny.

Another fun post, Sandra, and what fun to "see" you in your school days. Your engagement photo showed a lovely you in younger times, but then you are still just as lovely today, my friend.

You were so cute. I love those photos and you were flawless as you grew older. I think as women, sometime we rely on others to tell us how we should look. Having spent my entire life in Catholic school from k to 11 I never could buy into it and will not buy it now. I think we have a differnet opinion of oyurselves. You were perfectly pretty. Thanks for sharing with us. HUGS to you.
