Wordy Wed at the Deli

While standing at the deli in Publix, waiting for Bob's Lebanon to be sliced, I said to a woman without a mask, it seems I am the only one in the store that is afraid of catching the virus.

While discussing the ins and outs of mask wearing, she was fidgeting and almost dancing. Suddenly she said, I just can't stand how everyone moves down here, I am from New York and as she snapped her fingers 3 times, she said up there we move, move, move. Here everyone moves slower than molasses!

I said well, it is really hot here and she jumped in on top of the rest of my sentence and said, Its not hot in the store, its freezing in here, besides they have only been on the clock for 3 hours they can't be that tired.

I hesitated because I did not want to say what i was thinking and she yelled over the counter Could someone help me, I am IN A HURRY!  she said to me after giving her order, I am picking up a cake and food for our retirement party at work, I don't have all day....

The good news is, the woman handed me my meat and I left in a hurry because I was about to explode! and say WHAT I WAS THINKING!

My hidden thoughts
Honey, 40 years from now when you are the age of those 3 women, I would like to see you standing in a deli dealing with people like you.

If you don't like it DOWN HERE, why don't you go back up THERE and let one of us have your job.

OH Yeah! just keep on moving fast in the tropics heat and humidity and see how long you live

Last but not least. Let me tell you what my grandmother here in Florida said to me as a child.
Do you know the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee?
Yankees go HOME, Damn Yankees STAY..
( she was referring to Florida is the hotspot for tourist, that go home, for retirees leaving the cold to retire here)

I am married to a Damn Yankee, he came here from PA in 1970.

My theory is, this young woman probably stood in the deli in NY, snapping her fingers and Yelling can someone help me? I am in a hurry.

The good news is I was entertained while waiting for the  woman slicing my meat, and she was Old, older than Me is what I was thinking, and she was slow as molasses..

I feel and think things but TRY not to say them out loud.

What you would have said to that woman is perfect, and perfecty true. I'm glad you didn't say any of it, the way people are exploding and beating each other up!!

"Yankees go HOME, Damn Yankees STAY.."

I love it! Good for you for being prudent and not saying anything.

Being 'laid back' as we say Downunder, is not just about the speed you move but the time you take to rise to an insult. She insulted your local culture. You were laid back. My bro can do perfect laid back response - wait the right amount of time in relaxed silence than calmly drawl out some perfect 'cut em down to size' response without wasting any energy over it. I've never learned that skill, i just have to keep my mouth shut. F

Well I'm a Yankee who doesn't live all that far from New York and people like her are the most annoying customers. Maybe if she was more prepared she could have left a little earlier to go pick up her stuff and then she wouldn't be in such a hurry. As for speed, I'm older than everyone else at work and I think I move faster than all of them.

The woman seems a little on the rude side. I feel sorry for these workers, knowing how little they get paid. I do not often strike up a conversation in a store, I would not have the nerve to say what she said. Some people are getting nasty to people wearing a mask now. Take care, enjoy your day!

What a nasty person no matter where she was from and I am sure that you were not the only one thinking of a comeback, Sandra.

My mama always said "what goes around, comes around". Some day that rude lady will get her just deserves!!

Glad you didn't say anything, with someone like that it probably would have gotten pretty ugly. I bet she didn't get her stuff any quicker either, just made herself miserable in the process. If I was working there with a customer like that I'd purposely go even slower!

Pubix deli seriously has to be the slowest place in our laid back state, I always order online so it's ready for pick up and then I show up at least 15 minutes later than I schedule it to be ready. Problem solved!

Amen sister! I can't agree with you enough

Ohhhh, my blood would be boiling. Someone needs to put that lady(?) in her place, but I'm glad that burden didn't fall to you.
She sounds just like my former boss -- entitled and expecting everyone to stand at attention. When I was working at Channel 10 years ago, my boss and another manager had a business trip to Miami. The way Ken tells it: When Noreen stepped out into the HOT, humid air she whirled around, stuck her finger in his face and practically shouted, "It's too hot; you need to DO something."

Oh MS I'm 100% with you on that. No one is making anyone stay in the hot, humid, slow moving south. If you don't like leave. Anyone who moves to a new state, country etc needs to realize they cannot nor should they try to reinvent where they left in the new place. We like it like it is, well not the heat and humidity. LOL

I think my tongue would have had a big bite taken out of it from wanting to say what I was thinking..
Some people think they are the only ones in the world that have places to go and people to see. I'm actually surprised she even talked to you..usually that kind just spew without wanting affirmation.
I agree with your inner thoughts

I would have been so mad my hair would sizzle! But -- sometimes you just have to step back from those toxic types. SO irritating, such bad attitudes! You did well not to explode or even say anything cutting. That's dangerous these days, yuck!

Good job on your self control!!!

Yes things are slower in Florida and I think that is nice. That lady should go back to New York. I like what your grandmother said.

I admire your self control :) We are such a fast food society to use that as an example. It's nice to go to areas where we can slow down and relax for a while, even if it take's a couple of days to get used to it.
