The osprey has several adaptations that suit its piscivorous lifestyle: 99% of food is fish.
They dive on live fish, lift into the air and tear it apart, feeding themselves and if they have babies they take turns feeding the fish to them.
to help lift the slippery fish from the water their talons have
reversible outer toes
nostrils that close for diving
sharp things under the toes and scales that are like barbs on the talons.
The photos today are from my archives, the first one is a collage of one osprey, 2 photos merged
The nest is in Bray Park and at the time I took the photos, the mom was in the nest, the dad on the light pole bringing her fish. Above is a collage of 3 photos?
Tomorrow, I will tell you where they get there fish and why they are in Bray park

They are very impressive birds. We have a few around here, and have seen them flying over the water and fishing. There must be well stocked water around there for them to get fish. Do they stay all year?
we love love love that berds....
Awesome photos. I bet it would be impressive to watch them dive for fish.
Awesome photos of the Osprey and nest. They are cool birds.
Take care, have a happy weekend!

My word, to have one nest so close by is quite something - to have photographed it, quite another. Then to work your image magic makes ti three times thrilling! YAM xx
Our local pair were at their nest yesterday. Great to see them getting ready for another breeding season.
I have only saw two osprey in oerson.. I think they are so handsome.
Years ago while in Virginia we took a river ride down the Jamestown river. I was amazed at the huge Osprey nests.
The guide told us each year they build on top of their nests
from the previous year. We saw some that were said to be 7' tall and estimated weight was astounding.

Great photos and I love the effects you created.
Thank you for that awesome information! I love learning about things I never knew before! I did not even know the name of that bird, until I came here.
And as for those photos, they are great!
These are cool factoids! Would those self-closing nostrils have come in handy during the pandemic? If only you were my teacher in high school, I'd have actually paid attention.
Those are amazing, I don't think we've ever seen any of those around here.
I love those huge birds and their whistle type call is so haunting.
Great photos from your archives too.
As Mevely said..if you were my teacher I would have learned so much more.

What great shots S, they are such beautiful birds!
I don't know if we have them or not - but funny they make their nest on top of a pole!
Wow! We don't have any those around here -- no bodies of water. Thanks. 😊
When I worked at Gulf Coast Research Lab, we all loved watching a huge nest that a pair of ospreys returned to year after year. I think it was on some kind of structure similar to the one in your photos. The Lab was on a high strip of land. Since my retirement we have occasionally visited the Gulf Island National Seashore site across from the Lab, but only once when the ospreys were roosting there.
Of course there are always the alligators, turtles and other birds to observe.
