The Big Suprise! Tight Budget?

Have you ever shopped with a calculator? I shopped with one like this from my first shopping trip for groceries the week after I married in 1962.
It was a MUST! After the two sons, it was even more a must.
I stopped with the calculator, after the first year of marriage to Bob in 1985.
If you are wondering where this is going, I saw something this past Saturday that I have never seen before in my considerable years on this earth.
Are you ready?
Get Set
Go!

I saw a Man, a Male, You know, not a female, shopping in Walmart for groceries with a CALCULATOR!
In shock, each time I met him in the store, I watched as he onehanded used the calculator, put the item in, tap in the cost. Not a cell phone, a real calculator.
I have seen females do this my entire life but never a male.
Now I have a surprise for YOU! Or maybe NOT.
I typed the description, male shopper, calculator in hand, digital art into Bing AI
and got these four males.
As an afterthought, I should have said groceries.
Have you seen a male using a calculator to shop in grocery store?
I can't remember the last time I saw a female doing this.
Now they don't shop for the amount they HAVE to spend, they just Charge It!
This young man, about 40, is my kind of shopper. Spending what he has to spend and spending it well.

the other three, AI created from my words.

my favorite of the four.

Y0ur AI sure created some good-looking men! No, I have never seen a man doing this. Most of them are too busy on their cell phones asking their wives how to choose and locate the groceries. I did not shop with a calculator; I had something much more primitive. I called it a clicker. About the size of a pack of cigarettes. Three punch buttons, one for dollars, tens, and cents. Push it for each category of the price. It made a loud clicking sound, but it worked. And no need to figure out how to use it, like you have to with a calculator. It is a primitive calculator for idiots.

I never saw a male either... butt there were two wimmen who tried to calculate something via mental math. they had 87 different results within 2 minutes and tried it again and again... sudenly a man behind them lost his marbles and said extra loud that makes 22!!! 22??? that was a result the two wimmen never got during their calculation , so they asked the man: are you sure? the man looked like jack nicholson in The Shining then he said : yes. I AM SURE. the wimmen nodded and said : oh good then we can take some more of this and some more of that and that makes at the end? the man suddenly looked like Napoleon after Waterloo and said: I have to go... the wimmen said: ha! he probably has no clue how to calculate properly. and because that skill was as far away from the two like the sun from the moon they decided to pay with their card if they have not enough cash... ;o)))

Hello,

No, I have never seen anyone with a calculator while food shopping.
I do see them looking at list, so maybe they did they calculating at home?
The workers carry around a handheld computer with the shopping list, they are in every isle now. Take care, have a great day and wonderful week!

No to both questions, Sandra, I have never used a calculator when shopping and have seen people using cell phones but it seemed this use was to follow a shopping list. I do however check the unit prices on the shelf item, which is something Grenville has always done.

When I was first married I would shop with a calculator. I had $40 to spend and I couldn't go a penny over. Back then $40 went a lot further than it does now though. I don't think I have ever seen a man using a calculator in the store.
I just noticed on the first picture, there is a creepy extra hand under the basket .

I have never done that and never seen anyone else do it, that I can recall. At my regular supermarket I always use self scanning and self checkout though, which serves the same purpose... I.e. with each item I scan I also see the total sum so far.

I haven't seen anyone using an actual calculator in years...I do see a lot of scanning of products on phones though...

No calculator here either but a lot of phone scanning by lots of shoppers.
Like Ginny , when I was first married I used one of those clicker gismos too. It was a pain but did help me stay on budget.
As one of the other bloggers said I do now check the unit pricing often to get the best bang for my buck.
Great post today. Thinking about things I haven't thought about for a while.

P.S.
Those hands on the first photo are really creepy. Especially the left hand(s)

No wonder you did a double-take! I'm surprised he didn't just use the calculator app on his cellular ... or ask Siri to add it all.
That second image (with the shopping bags in his right hand) gives me the creeps. I agree, b/w Bachelor #4 is the best.

I go shopping with a list; usually see other shoppers (both male and female) with lists. No calculators.

I never grocery shopped with a calculator. I just rounded up to the highest whole dollar and kept the running total in my head. I was always under my budget that way.

We are surprised there isn't some sort of phone app that allows you to can the barcodes as you shop (possibly there is and he hasn't discovered it yet). F sort of adds it up in her head - very roughly. These days she doesn't have to be quite so careful, but it won't always be like that - we are between paying off the mortgage and retirement..... xxx Mr T
