A Word To The Wise Part 2

Once upon a time, there was a MadSnapper that loved to play with fire.
While cleaning the kitchen she found a box of long matches that were 20 years old. So old they would not strike and burn but required a much newer match and a lot shorter, to ignite them. MadSnapper feared if she put them in the trash bin, when the garbage gobbling truck picked them up, and squeezed all that garbage they would ignite causing the city garbage truck to burst into flames, thereby killing the driver and the two riding on the back.
In a matter of moments of lunacy, she took a PLASTIC bottle, stood the matches in it and used 6 matches trying to light them. At first it was small, see above photos, then the 20 mph winds that were blowing in the Florida Cool Front, whooshed them into mighty flames.

I was ready with iPhone in hand and grabbed these burst photos, You do not get photos of the mighty flames because I put the phone down and screamed for Bob, who was 6 feet away and did not even notice what I was doing Until I Screamed.
the reason for the scream, was the fact they were in a FLAMMABLE BOTTLE, the fire was raging, the wind was howling, and I was afraid to pick up the bottle, because if I dropped it in the zillion pine needles on the ground it could, well, burn our house down and the neighbors too.
THE MAN, while cursing like a sailor and yelling at me for doing it, grabbed it, dropped it on the grill, and TRYED to Blow it out with his mouth...
OMG! I ran to the small bucket that the faucets drips in and dumped it on the flames and Thank You Lord, the fire went out.
Close but no disaster, NO THANKS TO the Firebug that calls herself MAD snapper.
The Man said WHY DID YOU DO THIS?
When I explained about the fire in the garbage truck, things did not go well.
I think I heard the word Idiot a few times in between HBO words.
The answer is Senior Moment! next time I will use Glass Bottle. KIDDING!
Would you throw old matches in the trash bin?

What a huge laugh you gave me describing the trash truck disaster!!! This will keep me happy for the rest of the week. I have had something similar happen more than once. I just dump the matches in the sink and soak them in running water. Turns out you were more levelheaded than Bob.

I'm glad it turned out all right!

wow what a moment.... fortunately nothing happened to you and there was no damage... I put one back in the box what was still fiery and the whole box turned into a flame thrower.. it killed my bangs and I looked like a full moon... oh man ;O(((

I was wondering what was going to happen when those matches burned down to the plastic bottle.
I don't normally have matches around here. It's always lighters. I have thrown those in the trash.

Maybe you want to throw Bob in the trash bin!

OMG... sorry for laughing out loud, but this was like a Lampoon scene... the two Stooges at work... but seriously, I am so glad it ended well. The question doesn't arise for me as I tend to use matches up. YAM xx

I'm laughing so hard, I really should get up and run to the bathroom before it's too late. (TMI?)

Gotta say, you've taken a "What If" scenario to a whole 'nother level. (*Bowing to the Queen*) And now you've given me something new to think about. Since learning the 'new' matches don't smell as good, the little fire bug inside me has shriveled up and died.

PS - Son was telling me just the other day how they were sitting out on a neighbor's deck having a few adult beverages and enjoying the fireworks he (the neighbor) had bought. All of a sudden, someone noticed an errant ash had landed on the box containing the rest. "Uh, that box is smoking" she observed. Like fight or flight, her husband went to throw it in the lake but didn't quite make it before it all exploded. Thank goodness, he only suffered minor burns.

I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing either. Seriously though, I'm glad all was well in the end. And I didn't know you could get fire blankets. To wrap yourself in and rush through a house fire to get outside. Do they have them for dogs too?

What's that dog doing in the fire blanket picture. It's a very cute dog.

Live and learn....Sounds like you learned a lot from the scary experience.

A friend of ours left her pug dog in the car while she ran in the store. The window was somewhat open, but he was in one of those dog seat belts of some kind. When she came back, he had tried to get out the window and hung himself on the seat belt. He was swinging by his neck dead when she came back.

No I would not throw old matches in the trash. I put any matches in an old tin full of water. They sit all night then I put them in the trash. I am afraid of fire of any kind.

Good Golly, I'm glad you didn't burn the house down..haha..
I don't use matches very often, usually its the lighter that does the trick (if I can get it to work)
Fires can happen so quickly take care and hang in there.

PS
I do love gnomes but only have the one I made 2 years ago and this one from my granddaughter.
I have no place to put them..we are trying to purge and I can't justify getting more things..much to Dave's relief...

I remember some of your fire days. I can't believe you did this. Glad you were able to get it put out. I Probably would have thrown them away in the trash without any thoughts of the truck starting on fire.

Oh wow! And you were trying to do the right thing by the truck drivers safety. Applauding for that thought but oh my goodness, isn't it just always the way? That was a scary experience and I'm glad it worked out well. I've had a few close calls with fires in my past. A chip pan in childhood was the first (cooking French fries). Parents were out, older sister frying and the pan caught on fire. It happened so fast! Even at 13 she knew how to use a dampened towel to suffocate the flames. At 10 all I could do was scream. She slapped me across the face and after I asked her why she did that, she said that's what you do to hysterical sisters. I told my parents later that she enjoyed it, lol! Parents came home to a blackened ceiling and sister had a talking to but it could have been so much worse. Glad your experience as scary as it was turned out well.

All's well that ends well. And we are sure the garbage man would be very happy to know he was spared quite the adventure.

That does sound like something I would have done LOL! I don't know what you're suppose to do with old matches.

Here we only use safety matches which can't self-ignite. (I've never seen any other kind sold here.) If I had to throw some away unused I'd still do what Ginny also suggests in her comment and soak them in water before throwing them in the bin.

Wow that is quite the story. I confess I did laugh because it's just well... funny! Besides one time when I was at Bible College after High School I sent my roommate to the Incinerator to throw the trash out. She came back to the room asking me if I was trying to kill her. In her hand was a full bottle of hairspray (the sprayer wouldn't work) that I'd thrown in the trash. Says right on the can, do not Incinerate! Who knew?

Oh sis! That was a very bad idea. The matches placed in water would have soaked them and rendered then useless. Glad no huge fire erupted. I recall losing our home in 2008 to fire and it was a horrible experience.
