Emerson Point Preserve

UP the boardwalk we went,
My friend Judy and I, up, up and away......to total peace and quiet, not a sound but a woodpecker knocking way off in the distance. we stood under a canopy of trees that are over 100 years old. NOTE: our hair matches the spanish moss (Judy pointed this out to me) not bad for a timer set photo. I sat the camera on the thin railing and did not think about it until I got home, if it had fallen off, it would have disapearred forever.

to see the full beauty and detail of the trees, click on photo

Then we CAREFULLY trudged down the other side of the mound and off to hike the trails

The most amazing thing happened, the sound of the woodpecker got louder and louder and There He Was!

And the most amazing thing was and I have never seen this before, not ONE but FOUR of them

Did you know they cry like a baby? If i had not seen and heard it I would not believe it. Judy is my witness.
Peace, Quiet and Woodpeckers....... to be continued in the next few post. Yes, the header was taken in the preserve.

Beautiful pictures. Love the Woodpecker ... I always try to find them but never can. You can tell when getting close but they seem to hide well.

These are beautiful pictures. I would certainly enjoy a visit to this place. You got very good pictures of the woodpecker. We rarely see more than one Pileated Woodpecker at a time around our house. Their cry is very distinct.

The trees look wicked with the stuff hanging down. Congrats on the woodpecker discovery.

Oh Sandra, I'm so glad that you finally got to see a Pileated woodpecker--not one but four... WOW!!!!

That place looked incredible. You and Judy must have had a great time in such a peaceful place. Bet you'll be going back there again!!!!

Love all of the Spanish moss.
Hugs,
Betsy

Great pics! Love the wood peckers. We have lots of them around here, but their heads are rounded, not like the ones in the pics. What is the header pic? Are they seeds? I can see the little furry edges. That is a beautiful pic. Love the big, old trees. The red in the center of the oak is beautiful.

These are very interesting pictures, the nature so different from ours. Fantastic shots of those woodpeckers.

Wonderful outing and pictures. So glad you included one of you & Judy. I miss the Spanish moss so much - so very pretty. We had our house sided because woodpeckers kept pecking holes in the wood siding. A long time ago my boss's grandson was visiting him & exclaimed when he saw a woodpecker, "Look, there's a redheaded blue jay!"

I love the purple header!! What are those things, pods of some sort, I think. Of course my planned post for tomorrow is all about something purple! The spanish moss and your hair is a real hoot!! But followers MUST click on that one tree picture, the third one, the spanish moss texture is so amazing when enlarged. The Pileated woodpeckers are a real sight, very big!! We have seen them several times around here. Have not heard the baby sound, though!! Once you see one, you don't forget it. I completly expect to see the ghosts of Scarlet O'Hara and Rhett Butler in your next post, twirling through the spanish moss, happy and together again in the afterlife.

Your header..especially the color looks plum but really resembles a lipstick plant unopend (birds mouth)? Anyway, I think your series is fabulous..the angle as well as dimension. I love the wispy trees above and below your photo- how nice! That orange one looks a lot like a Royal Poinciana tree- The wood Pecker shots are really charming (you didn't make um cry did you) never heard that! lol:)) Great post Sandra-

I visited Emerson Point this spring for the first time...loved it.

We often have a pileated woodpecker on the Washington palm in the yard next door. One day I went out and there were four babies on the tree. That was exciting to see.

What a wonderful place, one of the things I miss about the deep South is the live oaks and Spanish moss.

Great capture of the Pileated Woodpecker, I never see them here.

How COOL! Woodpeckers are the coolest birds. And no, I didn't know about the baby cry thing! Strange!

I love the pictures of him hanging beneath the branch. You've captured great detail on him! I saw a woodpecker very similar to this in Mexico. It had lines on its body and looked a bit like a skeleton! Sadly the pictures didn't work out because he was too far away.

What a pretty place-and the pic of you 2 turned out great! We have a woodpecker like that or it looks like that here. Sometimes it pecks the side of our house : ) And boy does my little dog bark when it does!
