For those of you who KNOW me, you are aware this is not a recipe for blackberries.
At heart I am a died-in-the-wool tightwad (cheapskate, penny pincher, miser, scrooge).
I stood looking at the box of Black Berries all the way from Guatemala on my Saturday AM weekly shopping trip. I put them in the basket returned them to the display, TWICE.
After I unpacked them, I opened the box and started to count them. Hubby watched from the breakfast bar with his eyebrows raised, when I reached for the calculator, Hubby said
"Just how much did you pay for those berries?"
Scott, I had a little PHUN with this photo even thought it is now Phriday
"Why do you ask?" she says
My fingers danced on the calculator and I replied
"9 cents each"
there were 42 of them and I paid 3.78 for the box. (they did come a long way from home, probably charged for shipping)
hubbies eyebrows went up and down twice and he said
"What?" (did I mention we share tightwadism)
Everything turned out fine, I remembered the next day was my birthday and reached in the drawer and
"voila, a birthday cake with no fat" and my blackberries are justified.

It is always good to make sure you are getting value for money, My wife is very careful except when the grandkids are involved, then she's thinks we are lottery winners.

Good for you, getting the blackberries. It's nice to treat yourself sometime. I don't buy them often but love them with cream and sugar or warm with ice cream! How do you like to eat them?
I am the same way you are about blackberries. They are expensive! Remember when we got all we wanted for free and they tasted so much better picked warm from the bush and eaten without washing them? And we are still alive! We would be picking them for Mama to make a blackberry cobbler or some blackberry dumplings, mmmmmmm..... (Bloggers, can you tell we are in the south?) I think lots of times we ate more than we took home, but we always had enough for a delicious dessert. Those were the good old days... We had so much less, but we appreciated it so much more....
I hope that your birthday treat was as good as it looks!
Just think, you would have paid much more for a birthday cake!

Good for you girl! My wife and I are like you guys, I've been known to squeeze the a quarter til the eagle squeels and I never would have paid that much for those, but I'm glad you had the birthday cake you wanted. Great shots too, by the way.
I did the same thing not long ago, Sandra... Shame on me... I paid $3 for my box though... But--as pretty as those blackberries were, mine were NOT that good. They weren't sweet like the wild blackberries we pick and eat up here... I just hadn't been out to pick any this year --so decided to buy them... HA---I'll never do that again, even on my birthday... I hope yours were worth the price...

They're beautiful and with the camera you made double use of them before you ate them!
My mum used to pick a lot of berries, not blackberries because they were not common where we lived, but raspberries and blueberries.
LOL...I'm laughing because that sounds like something I would do!

I didn't know there was such a thing as a "no-fat" Birthday cake....Happy Birthday anyway and love your story about the berries. Why do they have to be so darn expensive. It seems the imported berries (or fruit) never have any flavor.
Why am I not surprised that my post tonight is on berries!!! We got some in the grocery store Saturday, as well! But our purchase was frought with drama and angst! I love the pretty close ups of these! And the little story. Phil eats a plate of these every other night. Too bad your birthday cake had to go to seed!
Now that is a yummy looking birthday cake. I do the same thing when I see them in the store, they go in and out of my cart a time or two. Usually they stay in the store but once in awhile I indulge. Hope they tasted as good as they look.
Found some of these a Sams and not a bad price. They were large and juicy... but a bit tart.

I'm the same way-a cheap skate : ) I carry stuff around and then give it too the cashier and tell her I changed my mind.
