Back Up Your Back Up

Just when you thought you were safe....... OH NOOOOOOO!
this is my Seagate External Hard Drive, purchased ONLY to hold photos, it is about 5 years old.
today it crashed, it is 285 gigs and was more than half full, that comes to over 100 gigs of photos.
I can take it to the GEEK sqad and they CAN get the photos off, for a FEE.
The reason for the post, Back up your Back up because your back up can CRASH.

You know a LOT more about this computer stuff than I do. I have all these pictures and I don't know where to put them. Help!

Wow, that's a real bummer Sandra. I don't have an external hard drive; I usually back everything up on CD's and jump drives. At least you haven't completely lost them.

I routinely back up my back up of photos. Our next step is off-premise backup.

That is scary... How many back-ups do we need??? A back-up for the back-up for the back-up, etc. etc. etc... Good GOSH!!!!

We have 6 external back-ups (GE has 4 and I have 2) --and so far, no problem. Each of them back-up specific things. We both have tons of pictures and then each of us has other important things --like my Family History program info.

Sorry--but glad you can get your pictures, plus a new back-up drive...GADS! Ain't computers wonderful????

Hugs,
Betsy

Hi Sandra

Sorry to hear about your crash problem. I think the only safe way to backup computer files is to use an internet backup service. There are many good ones you can choose from nowadays. Carbonite is one you might want to take a look at. http://www.carbonite.com/

Oh no. I really never thought of backing up the back up. I do have an external hard drive that I keep all my pictures on. I think mine is about 3 or 4 years old. Thanks for the warning

I did not know an external back up hard drive would crash. I am totally ignorant. So you have to back up your back up huh? Does it ever end??

This is soo true..my husband bought me 500 gb's this past month..so I can just plug it in whatever computer I'm using and pull photos out of the archives- your right, it's really the best thing you can do and I think it's worth the fee- sorry to hear that! I have one back up and on another older model I only had a flash and was clogging it up already! My brain is what needs a nice memory chip in it Sandra!! I'm sure when I'm on my death bed they'll come up with something nifty..everything else will be failing and my perception will be uncanny!!

HUH???? I didn't even know an extrrnal hard drive could crash! Is there no end to it???? How much will they charge, will you pay? My daughter-in-law only uses DVD's or C.D.'s to keep her pictures on.

Yep, always have a back-up plan for the back up. I just got a new little 500 GB portable drive and transferred all my photos to it. I also have online file storage with my Norton 360.
