Spanish Moss

More photos from my Saturday visit to the park.

I am from the deep South, which means Spanish moss is a familiar sight to me and I love the beauty it adds to the trees.

We call them air plants because they appear to grow from the air, but they actually make their own food from things they grab from the air. Moss is self sustaining
little seeds blow around and spread from tree to tree. It also might just contain little biting bugs in them, as some of our friends from the North find when they take it home.
. Red bugs and chiggers Oh My,  as I know from experience.
 I
Do you have Spanish Moss where you live? have you seen this amazing and beautiful plant?

Beautiful photos of the Spanish Moss and those gorgeous old trees. As a Southern girl no longer in the South I remember the moss and air plants well. Our area is way to dry for these plants. The red bugs and chiggers I do not miss at all!

My first trip to the Deep South was to Florida State University, and I was enthralled by the Spanish Moss. I still love seeing it when we go down south. I think it's beautiful, as are your pictures.

I finally get to see some really good close-up pictures of this!! The color makes it look kind of dead. It is really creepy, and the BUGS!!! I don't think I have ever seen any that's not in a picture, but I will keep my eyes open. I wonder if there even is any in Virginia? If I ever see any, you can be sure I'll snap!! Is it considered invasive there, or do people like it? And does it do any good, or just hang around?? HA HA HA!!! Get it, hang around??

Great shots of the Spanish moss. We don't have it here in this part of California. We do have a lot of Mistletoe in our trees which isn't good for them.
Red bugs and chiggers sound awful. No thanks on them.

None that I know of, although I have never gone to the Great Dismal Swamp... that would be the most likely place for it if we have it. It is only a few miles... less than ten.. from our house, but have not had the time... or the industrial strength mosquito repellent.

We saw Spanish Moss on a couple of trips to Savannah, Sandra, and I believe that's your home city. It was beautiful in the many parks. No, we never brought any home, just admired it and left it there.

love the strong shadows in the header; love the moss. i have missed posts April 4-today, so have some catching up to do. Yes, i have lived all my life in Spanish moss territory. Not so much here these days since Katrina blew or surged so much away, including the trees.

When I was little, my parents and i were in a small boat fishing in a "dead river" off West Pearl River in Louisiana. We were catching fish as fast as we throw a line out and then pull them into the boat.

Unknown to my parents and me, I was extremely nearsighted. I became distracted by the moss overhead. It looked to me like the most beautiful, billowy gray clouds.

Of course i started bugging my father to get me some. I was a little girl who just wouldn't let up. If you love to fish or know someone who does, you understand the angst of stopping in the middle of a run of fish that were biting every time you put a hook in the water.

Finally in exasperation, he said, "You want moss, I will get you moss." He started pulling it down until the boat was full. Eek! Close up I could see just fine. Bugs, bugs, bugs! That was the day I learned that things are not always what they appear to be!

This is beautiful Sandra..and before I forget, I do hope your feeling better!!
I use Spanish Moss when I make wreaths at Christmas time. I can imagine..Ok, this bugged me as I know I've seen it around here especially when I look at your photos but we refer to it as Pele's hair (Volcano goddess). I checked..It was introduced to Hawaii in the 19th century, but resembles fine hair like volcanic glass. During the early 80's when Mauna Loa and Kilauea were both errupting, it rained that volcanic looking brittle glass all over the place! Anyhow, I enjoyed your photos Sandra. Please get better (hugs)
