Lost In The Fifties....

Saturday morning, I met my friend Diane and her parents and her sister at Manatee Historical Village. For a while we hopped from building to building in the rain, and then we got Lost In The Fifties. Bradenton has a new Soda Shop called  Bradenton Scoop Ice Cream Parlor. Can you guess what I had for LUNCH?

(note: I was the ONLY one in the place taking photos of my food. does that surprise you?)

If you guessed banana split and a chocolate coke, YOU GOT IT! I have not had either since the late fifties.

And will not eat another one for another fifty years... YIKES! talk about SWEET, even sweeter than ME.

It is decorated with antiques from the 30's through the fifties.

Yes, they still make the Shakes using that old milk shake stirrer thingy you see below. No the jukebox, coke machine do not work. I love the light fixtures. I felt I had dropped back to 1958. Except of course I look a tad different now.  Any of you remember any of this?

I grabbed below shot of the outside of the building off Google Maps... they serve a gazillon flavors of ice cream and Ice Cream sodas, the Old Fashioned Way, Milk Shakes, sandwiches, the list is long.

LOOK OUT OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS..... I was in Snapper Frenzy at the Historical Village where all the buildings are more than a hundred years old.
NO!! I was not around then, but almost.....

Well as you probably know, what happens in the US eventually makes its way to the UK about 60 years later, so we're probably about due to get chocolate coke! I have NEVER heard of that. Id it just coke with chocolate syrup? It sounds horrible, but still I am curious!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! Someone told me how to make a chocolate Coke once, but I forgot and never made one, boo hoo, now I want one! Was it really good? Seems by the time you mix the chocolate with the Coke, the carbonation would be gone. I have a milkshake maker just like that, only for one! I mix up Instant Breakfast in it, and add just a bit of ice-cream to thicken it and keep the bubbles. I have never seen a light like this, it is cool! And the little horse trike. But it does look like the rider would just slide down the back of the horse. I love the cash register, I love everything. I hate it when I am the only one with a camera!!

Oh yum, that banana split looks delicious. I love things like that old cash register but sorry to hear the jukebox doesn't work. Did they have cherry coke, that was always my favorite?

Now I have the urge to find some reruns of Happy Days!

I used to love the old milk bars, so simple. My brother took me to one when I was quite young, I thought I was the bees knees...

The ice cream and coke looks so scrummy, just my kind of treat.

Ohhhhhh the memories.
Sandra do you remember the "Victory Soda Shop" on waters avenue? There was also a hobie shop next to it.

Double yum! I like vanilla Dr Peppers, so I can imagine the chocolate coke is pretty good. That banana split reminds me of the 70's- that's about how long it's been since I have had one.

I remember that milkshake maker. That banana split looks worth every calorie ingested!! I have never heard of a chocolate coke but used to have vanilla cokes and cherry cokes on occasion.

Now I want a banana split.

Best,
Bonnie

I just LOVE places like that! There are two relatively new but vintage shops in Phila that I need to visit. One is an old soda fountain, the other a vintage candy shop. I really need to make the time to get down there now.

Gosh, I love seeing all these old things.. so that shows my age.. They are truly beautiful. I especially love the cash register. How far we have come, yet nothing is as ornate today.

sounds like a great place to splurge a bit!

Never had a chocolate coke. He says our soda fountain used to make 'em, but all I remember are things like cherry cokes. ,-)

Oh and I had plenty of rum cokes, back-in-the-day. -chuckle-

Hello Sandra, I used to work at a soda shop like that when I was in high school. Oh, those banana splits! Haven't had one in years.
Wonderful pictures.

Oh my word that banana split is making my mouth water. When I was a child we made banana splits every Saturday night.
I really enjoyed the decor of the soda shop too. That shade of creamy green has always been a favorite and we have a very similar color on our office/exercise room walls.

A, health food! ;)
I'm pretty sure I never went to a place like that in the 1950s. (I was born in 1955...)

That looks so good! Never heard of a chocolate coke! It has been years since I've had a banana split. The only place I ever got them at was at the Dairy Queen. I'm glad you got to enjoy yourself going back to the 50's!

Man -I haven't had a chocolate coke since about 1957. Or 8 or 9. I'd forgotten about them. When I get down to 103 pounds, I'll have that strawberry banana split too. I'm trying to forget that I had a piece of key lime pie in a shop in Montgomery, Ohio. Man that was good.

That chocolate coke sounds yummy! What a cool place to eat! I like your comment "even sweeter than me"...good one! I love the register, it's gorgeous! So glad you took photos!

Ice cream and chocolate coke are two of my favorites too. Reminds me of Happy Days and The Fonz.

I admire your restraint--50 years between banana splits. I guess it has been several years since I had one so I will take you up on the swap! Alas, I don't think either the banana split or cinnamon roll would ship well!

In the meantime I have a weakness for Blue Bell banana split ice cream that I succumb to much too often!

Loved those photos. I have never tasted a chocolate Coke!

What a fun place, reminds me of a place I used to go with my mom when I was a kid. We would go shopping and stop for lunch.
That banana split sure does look tempting and that cash register is really cool

Remington said...

Nope, I don't remember any of that....but Beth says she does! She said she loved chocolate and cherry cokes from the foundation and when they would make the milk shakes and give you the glass full AND the container they made it in with the left overs! Awesome post, my friend!

It's been ages since I've had a chocolate coke. I've had a banana split more recently, but I must say that yours looks especially yummy. This looks like a great place for a snack.

Oh the days of a real soda fountain! My favorite was always a vanilla coke or a caramel sundae.
