This old stove is inside the 1860 courthouse. At age 10 , I loved to stand (children were not allowed in the chairs) and listen to the stories told around the pot belly stove in the general store that was a short walk from the parsonage where we lived in Sloan s Valley KY
Gather round this stove and listen to.........
The Tale of The Devil in the DVR.
or
Bring on a SMART DVR
or
Bring on a SMART DVR
(a DVR is the box provided by cable company to record TV shows to watch on demand.)
We LOVE the TV Series, "So You Think You can dance" and it is on permanent DVR
Grand finale, we settle in to watch... halfway through, up pops President Obama for 8 minutes. I scream OH NO... we will not get to see who won...
The announce after the break we will KNOW WHO WON....the DVR goes to STOP and Delete, WHO WON?? screams MadSnapper...
I rush to computer and pull up Fox and it is there, I can see it, but I can't view it with out the magic of our cable provider paying them so we can VIEW the TV shows... Fox has now locked for 30 days their prime time series.
The 8 PM NHRA drag racing was pre-recorded on said Devil DVR
Fast Forward to next day... 6:30 am Bob clicks on NHRA and guess what is recorded? NASCAR but it is the middle half but NOT the end. (You know Like Who Won the race.) a
and.................
NO DRAG RACING, (I am yelling because he did) .
Bob loves NHRA drag racing like I love PicMonkey...
I race to the computer, pull up NHRA.com and NOOOOOOO
They have it LOCKED now... we can only watch a TV program if we have the right provider who PAYS them for us to watch it.... OOPS! sorry that was a repeat...
We need a SMART DVR.... come on, it should know what to do in case of rain out.. It should know if the tennis game goes over time to record said overtime...and it certainly should know if the President takes 8 minutes out of the show to add 8 to the end.. Just Sayin
I know This was a long tale but we are Sitting around the pot belly stove killing time. at least I HOPE you were sitting.

A lot has changed and people don't seem to "gather" around anything anymore. Even TV, that used to bind the collective viewers has now been split into laptops, PC's, tablets, etc.

Love that pot belly stove...I bet it has heard a lot of tails...sorry about your DVR problems...technology is great until it isn't lol
I'm not even smart enough to know what a smart DVR is!! Actually, I think I'd like to just sit around the radio like the Walton's did--on T.V.!!
Best,
Bonnie
They have made it a lot harder these days. I love my Netflix I can watch justified on it and I have the normal tv as well now to have some options now when the chilly evenings comes brrrrrr
I adore these images today. So frustrating about your shows.
Cute. I love sharing you memories of stories around the pot bellied stove, I can envision it!
What absolutely warm and gorgeous photos! Love pot belly stoves, sunlight, and wood floors. Warms my heart!
That reminds me of the old wood stove my grandma and grandpa used to have. Cool!

you're a mess, but i get it. last season, we had a minor brown-out during some dvr taping which stopped the dvr from getting the last episode of 'dexter' on showtime. by the time i watched it (or tried to), it was 2 weeks later and they had stopped re-airing it. dish doesn't offer showtime on demand so i had to wait until this season was about to begin to finally catch the season finale from last year... :)
MS I think you told a great story...I can vividly picture children eagerly listening to great stories. The right person telling a story or reading a book to a child introduces them to a world of wonder for their entire life.

Love ole stoves like that. My Great Aunt had one in her house when I was a little girl. It was their own source of heat....
CBS drives us insane on Sunday nights... They always run late during football and golf seasons --and we have shows DVR'd.. Of course, we never get the right thing recorded... Seems like CBS would KNOW that they are always running late. Why don't they just program it that way instead of putting us through this?????? Grrrrrrrr
Hugs,
Betsy
I can't tell you how many times we are watching a movie and the last couple of minutes - gone!
Love the pot belly stove.

I love the stove and I like your comments. Our DVR drives us crazy when events run over.
My grandma had one of those old black pot bellied stoves. I remember it when I was a kid.
Why couldn't children sit in chairs? Were there only enough for the elders? Sandra these are the kinds of things that get posted on Dusty Old Thing on Facebook (you should like this page!) Pictures of old time items or collectibles with stories attached. I love pictures of antiques that come with stories!
Frustrating for sure, Sandra! Let us know if you ever find a smart DVR. ;))
Find something smart Sandra! Technology is a real challenge for me too. Sometimes I can't figure out the remotes. My husband gets a bit frustrated, gee there is so much to remember! LOVE your pot belly stove photo, what a great building to wander around in. Think I am back? Hope so.
Hey there Sandra.....understand those DVR problems...we are right there with you ....especially this big Dallas fan that lives here!!!!! I love the old pot belly stove. I remember the wonderful heat that one of those things could radiate!

Love that pot belly stove. Don't think I ever saw one quite like it. But a relative did have a round iron fire place in their living room back in my childhood.
Who won?
Love the stove and the building.
I love your pot belly stove stories, because it happens to me of course. We have a show on automatic record and it has started over a half hour late for the last two weeks!! So we just do not watch. Maybe football, we don't know. If I KNOW there is going to be a football game on a channel with my show, I will go into the box and tape everything after the show, that way no matter how late it is, I will get to see it. I love the stove and the beautiful window pane light coming through onto the floor. WHY couldn't kids sit in the chair, because then there were not enough for both kids and adults?
I scorched my winter coat warming myself in front of a wood stove when I was a first grader. Don't remember whether it was a pot bellied one or not; it was in a country schoolroom.
I remember those stoves! Love them.
I hate to admit this, but I watch tv so seldom and we have a DVR and I've never used it. Not sure I remember how!
You can make your story as long as you like, it's rather cozy sitting around the pot bellied stove.
How frustrating with the DVR. Lucky for me I never record anything otherwise I would be screaming too :)
i love your pot belly-stove stories. this stove also reminded me there was a pot-belly stove in my parents' home. your post was a delight to read.
That is frustration with a capitol F. My daughter had a wood burning stove and it really heats her place up...but you have to chop wood for it :( I would freeze.
Ah, a distinct advantage to the yarns spun around that stove, no government or cable bureaucracy, and no tecno stupidity to interrupt the entertainment.
Tell Bob Matt Kenseth won with Kyle Busch not far behind. I would have missed it had it not been for the rain delay. Junior had a blown engine and DNF.
That old potbellied stove is awesome. I remember my grandparents having one. A lot of the old time churches had them too. I also remember you had to keep turning or you would toast your backside. LOL!
My grandparents had something very similar. :)
A DVR isn't provided per say, they are $18.00 a month here in CA. Have you tried HULU, it's free online! Best place to go to watch TV shows you missed. Love the pot belly stove.
I heard you yelling all the way up here! Did you hear me Sunday night? A new series of Foyle's War on PBS started...I LOVE that show...the sound was horrible...you you would hear one syllable and not the next! Thank goodness there is repeats...it played again that night but sound still off...I emailed in a complaint...it was fixed the next day...so I have it set to record Saturday just in case we are not home. Just so frustrating...
I'm right there with you Sandra.
More than once Hubby and I have yelled at the TV because the program ran over and we never see the end of what we want to. Poor Hubby and his Nascar and football. Not a pretty sight!
Smart DVR?
Haha
But did you know more folks use streaming devices to watch stuff on computers or devices and that TV as we know it is starting to suffer? People are watching it less!
