Gamble Plantation - Dog Tent

click to enlarge to see button holes

We were told this is called a "dog tent" and they borrowed the idea from Napoleon's army. Enlarge to see the buttons.

Each soldier carried one half folded and in his back pack. It could be buttoned together to form a tent for two or a lean-to for one...

They used sticks to hold it up in the middle, and carried cord to use if there were no sticks.

The trees at Gamble mansion or 40 to 150 years old.
There may be a few that were there during The War Between The States.

X marks our SUV in the parking lot
We love our Spanish moss, hanging in the trees. We do NOT love the pollen falling like rain. I looked down at the camera LED and it was covered in yellow pollen and all over the camera. When we got in the Kia to leave, I had to use the window washer because the windshield was covered in yellow powder.

I never had an allergy in my life until I was just over 60 years old. so what is up with that? now pollen and perfume are my enemy. The month of March is Bob's month to be sick all month with allergies.

These very old oaks are a common sight here

The tent is neat! I love the spanish moss and the trees. Sorry about the allergies. I guess this is a bad time.. Do you need some rain to wash the pollen away.. Great post, happy Tuesday!

Love the Spanish moss but we can well believe the pollen is a pain. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

I think Spanish moss is spooky. Love it! I don't like the little red mites that live in it though. People can develop allergies at any time in life--or, so I've heard.
So far, so good for us.

Best,
Bonnie

The tent is quite clever! Yep, pollen (and perfume) is a problem for me too.

Nice tent. I have food allergies
and pollen.

I think at times. I am better off in a bubble.

Off to grocery store.

Mild here.

Have a nice Tuesday my friend.

I LOVE SPANISH MOSS..HEY DID YOU SEE A CAT TENT TOO?

SPANISH MOSS STORY: YEARS AGO I WORKED FOR THE NC HOME BUILDERS ASSOC. MY DAUGHTER AND I HAD TO DRIVE TO THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN MYRTLE BEACH...HUBBY HAD TO WORK AND WAS COMING DOWN LATER...ANY WAY THIS WAS WAY BACK IN THE EARLY 80'S..NO CELLS NO GPS. HUBBY WROTE EXPLICIT DIRECTIONS. MY DAUGHTER WAS MY GPS (READING DIRECTIONS). SHE DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN MY ABILITY NOT TO GET LOST. SHE ASKED HER DAD HOW WE'D KNOW IF WE WERE GOING THE RIGHT WAY...HE SAID IF YOU SEE SPANISH MOSS KEEP GOING STRAIGHT, IF YOU SEE HILLS TURN AROUND.
STILL FUNNY TO THIS DAY...WE MADE IT

a doc once told me it took several years of living in texas before he began to develop seasonal allergies so he was not surprised i was starting to after 20 years or so. *sigh*

I love live oaks draped in Spanish Moss.

I thought they were pup tents. I learn something new every day.

I think as we get older our immune system declines. I too never suffered from allergies until just the last year or so. Spanish moss is pretty but it houses chiggers and other insects which are much worse than pollen if they fall on you!

they were just talking about pollen on the news. I'm the same way, never had allergies until just a few years ago. my son has allergies and he played outside in the dirt and grass as a youngster. :) we love seeing huge strong oak trees. :)

That is a very interesting tent, how clever! One of my favorite things to see in Florida is the moss, besides my family that is :)

Old trees are awesome, it really tickles imagination to know they may have "seen" events in the past that took place over a hundred years ago.

I'd prefer the camper van to the tent ;) but I guess the tent is quite a clever construction really.

I had no allergies in childhood but it started in my teens for me. So I always wondered if there may be a connection to hormones that change with age.

I remember the Spanish Moss and how beautiful it looks. Very tropical looking. Sorry about your allergies. I started getting them after 60.

I wonder why they call them Dog Tents? The Spanish Moss is so pretty, we have zero here, it is only a deep south thing. My doctors say you can become allergic to anything at any time in your life. You can also stop being allergic just as mysteriously as your started.

Interesting about the tent. Those trees are so beautiful. Here, we get a lot of pine pollen and have to use the wipers to clear the yellow off the windshield. When it rains, the water flows yellow! We have been sneezing a lot and also Blue the cat.

Oh,my, I love that Spanish moss....Roger still has his pup tent...I don't know if it was one actually issued to him in the Marines...but he has one. A bit more advanced than the one you are showing. And they call them pup tents, not dog...

Pollen and perfume have been my enemies for as along as I can remember. Hang in there during pollen season!

I've heard of pup tents but never heard them called dog tents. Learn something new every day.
I like the spanish moss but eww on the pollen.
The last couple years I've been noticing that some perfumes and some chemicals really bother me. I'll start coughing like crazy

Drooling over your tree shots. Those kinds of trees always give me visions of wild spooky stories and the moss adds to the fantasy. lol

Pine pollen season was our enemy in VA and the cars would be covered in yellow dust for several weeks.
