Crockpot Power Tale

The morning of the big STORM this past week, I put a pork roast in the crockpot at 5 am, we eat our big meal at noon each day. The smell was divine.

I said to Bob as the rain poured, the thunder boomed and the lightning flashed.. "I hope the power stays on, what will we do about the crock pot if it goes off"

That stirred our memory of Thanksgiving Turkey gone awry about 15 years ago. The kids and spouses were here for TG dinner, the Turkey was in at 5 am, the power went off for about 30 minutes. Came back on... and hour later it went off for and hour, came back on. OFF then ON.. we had no idea how long the turkey had cooked and had to rely on the popper to pop when it was done.

Me being who I am, I played all the scenarios of Salmonella, and it might kill us, because who knew what was growing while the power was off... HOURS later we ate the on again off again turkey and we are all still living.

That memory stirred the memory of the Christmas Turkey that was thrown in the trash.  We had finished dinner, the turkey was on the counter, sitting in it's tin foil. Bob decided as soon as family left to CHANGE THE fluorescent bulbs in the kitchen ceiling, Before he took the turkey off the carcass to store in fridge.

Let your mind go there... because he dropped the 4 foot long bulb, and it exploded all over the kitchen and all inside the turkey... glass every where, Turkey Tossed....  All these memories stirred because the crockpot was on in a storm....

So did the crockpot lose power? What stories, I thoroughly enjoyed them. You were very brave to eat that turkey, with the power going on and off. I wouldn't have been able to! But I would have let the others take their chances if they wanted.

This post provoked a memory for me regarding the exploding light bulb.
Just a few weeks ago the shade on the ceiling fan wiggled loose ( I guess the screws gradually came loose) and fell straight down onto my desk, luckily I or one of the cats were not sitting there, it would certainly have killed the cat and given me a nasty headache.

I've been under an exploding fluoro tube. It is not fun. You'd think, as a vego, I'd not face risks of food poisoning. However, there was a festive occasion where the power went off during the cooking of the sabadhana (a savoury tapioca). Nobody paid much attention then 90 minutes later power was back. A day later, lots of folk were not so healthy, including yours truly! Turns out anything starchy can develop nasties too. YAM xx

It's funny where memory lane can lead you sometimes. One story triggers a memory that triggers another and so on and so on. I probably would have been ok with the on again off again turkey but the glass filled one would have gone in the trash here too.
I remember one time the power went out when I was making dinner. I thought no big deal, we have a gas stove. Unfortunately, the gas oven has an electronic ignition so that meant the oven would not work.

I am so far behind in visiting...yes indeed, that would be running through my head...turkey, not thoroughly cooked...everybody getting sick! And don't wanna eat turkey with glass shards!

Hello,

I remember one Thanksgiving when our power went off and on. We were expecting everyone here for dinner. It came back by the time we were packing stuff up to take to my sister's place. I hope your crockpot stayed on. They say it is good to eat your bigger meal earlier in the day. Some people do not eat till my bed time. Enjoy your day!

Funny! I once put a pork roast in the slow cooker for a dinner with friends later that evening. When I went to take it out as they stood there hungry, I realized it had been on warm all day. I now wear my glasses ALL the time! Lol

Hahahahaha! One holiday we were cooking a big ham and the breaker tripped on that plug and we didn’t realize it! Not a happy ending!

I'm sorry … I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but I started laughing hysterically at the idea of fluorescent shards all over the turkey! (You've such a funny way of narrating!)

Because I know next-to-nothing about food safety or storage, I'd probably be visualizing trips to the E.R., unable to enjoy Thanksgiving.
Nowadays, I suppose the ceramic insides of crock pots help retain a safe temp. That's a good question for the manufacturer!

Oh do I know your fear about the power when the crock pot is working its magic. And just today I was visiting a Cleo a kitty from NC. Her post reminded me of a funny story too that of course will be shared on my personal blog. All it takes is one thing to jog our gray matter. Like your turkey story. Yikes to have to throw it all out just hurts the pocketbook and tastebuds. I love it left over. Once we had left over turkey I was making the best smell soup on the stove in a big pyrex pot. Evidently there was a weak spot or unseen crack in the pot. I stirred it one time with a plastic ladle the entire pot broke into pieces...and to add insult to injury I had one of the stoves with electric eyes that. If I could have picked up that stove I would have thrown it out the back door but I had to clean it up.
Took forever just like anytime a pot would boil over except this time I had turkey soup all under the elements. As soon as it was time to replace that stove I bought a solid surface cook top.

Oh my you have stirred so many memories of me...the not so great cook.
Glad you were able to eat that pork roast. It is one of my favorite things to do in the crock pot. You are making me drool thinking about it.
I remember one year...early on in our marriage when I was having my folks over for Thanksgiving dinner. I had set the "automatic" timer starter on the oven so it would start while we were out at church.
Came home to an ice cold oven and a very pale bird. Dinner was so , so late that night. Never did the self started again!

I guess we all have some cooking disasters. The glass in the turkey has to be one of the most distressing! My husbands mother dropped the turkey in front of all the guests and as it rolled across the floor, she said, "Son, just take this back to the kitchen and bring in the "other" turkey." lol

Oh my, those are some stories you shared.

When Mark and I were divorced I took the kids to Milwaukee to have Thanksgiving dinner with my brother and his partner. Well they had cleaned their stove and apparently put the knobs back on wrong and couldn't get the oven to light. Ended up getting something from a neighbor to cook the turkey in. Had the gas company out on Thanksgiving day and it of course wasn't the gas at all!!

Hope the crockpot did not lose power and that you were able to enjoy the roast, Sandra.
