Home is where the heart is

Two of the happiest years of my life were spent in this home. I was 13 - 15 years old. The photo below is a snip from Google Earth. I took it into PicMonkey and messed with it, because back then I thought it was HUGE and a mansion. There was no red porch or the white extension on the back. The door to go out of the basement was there, the haunted basement, where the jars of canned goods lived and the coal shoot was. The steps into the house was where the slop jar lived, because it had no bathroom inside. My job was to carry the two slop jars down that hill to the outhouse. I cried all the way the 10 hour drive from their to Savannah, in Dec of 1959. Fond Memories prove Home is Where the heart is...

I LOVE it, and I love finally seeing it. Truly an age of innocence.

And even better, it is still THERE!

God idea to use Google Earth to revisit. I keep forgetting about that possibility.

It looks like a nice place. I imagine there's no longer a slop jar on the steps any more :)

Memories are wonderful. It would be good to be able to revisit but then again, maybe not. I revisited my birth home and couldn't believe how small it was, it was big to me when I was a child.

MS what a love place Sloans Valley is. My Annie Ma had a basement with a concrete floor. On a rainy or cold day she sent all the grands down there to roller skate...you know the old fashion skates made out of steel that you strapped to your shoes. No toe stops on them... just the walls o f the basement were how we stopped

Isn't it amazing that we can find those images on the internet now. My little house that I grew up is run down and looks pitiful. I remember good times...and bad. Have a good day! We're getting some showers today I think!

What a lovely home! I can remember thinking I lived in a mansion too and when I see it today...DEFINITELY not a mansion! HA! Those memories are the best though! Annster's Domain

Makes me think of the song...Precious Memories...how they linger.....I can't even remember the rest of the words right now.....
Hang on to those good memories.
They are like gold.

It also makes me think just now of a memory from LONG ago...
I think I must have been about 5 and my Daddy bought a "play tent"...more of a lean-to affair...for me.
It was put up in our backyard and I played "pretend" in there for hours. One of the best memories was when Daddy laid down in there with me and we just laughed and talked the silly way a 5 year old would.
Thanks for resurrecting that long forgotten blast from the past.

It is such a pretty house and I love what you did with it in that first shot. Great that you have such good memories, I enjoyed reading about them. Thanks Sandra :)

Your title totally sucked me in … I love everything about this. Your first shot looks like something in a dream. I've lived in lots of different homes and apartments, but there's only one (in Texas) I still dream about … in vain.

What a story! It reminds me of my childhood with the coal shoot and where there was a cold storage for things like winter apples, canned goods, and so on. Since it was in a suburb of Stockholm, we did have a bathroom, but no washing machine. That was also done in huge tubs in the basement. Then hung on lines. Spiders galore in that basement, I will never forget them.

Your job was the slop jars - you were tough.
I do agree with you though - when i go back to where i was raised - I just get near there and it feels like home. I don't know what that is.
