My First Visit to Aldi

The Wad of Ads hit our mailbox, and as I glanced through I said to Bob, I have never shopped Aldi, and my favorite cashier at the self checkout told me she has 8 people to feed and she stops in Aldi for milk, bread and produce because it is cheaper than Walmart, even with her discount. She leaves Aldi and buys the rest at Wal-Mart!
What's an Aldi? Where is it? I gave in depth info. (remember this)

Thursday AM I had a test at the doctors office at 9 am.

I came out of the office and realized Publix was in the same shopping Center. I shop the one closer to my house, so I stopped for Bob's lunch meat and my sugar free cookies, came out and said AHA!
19 dollars later I walked to the car
and realized
Family Dollar was right there and I have not been in one in 2 years.

I wandered through the Christmas stuff, and stepped around the corner and there was a blanket like
the one we have that is wearing out and it was
ONLY 20 dollars.
I continued down the shopping plaza passing 5 empty stores and a theater and there it was.
Aldi.
All our doctors are there but I rush in and out and home. All of this is on
The Road To The Beaches! I don't shop there.
I Remember the ad!
I stopped and wandered, and 20 minutes later staggered out with
54 dollars of food.
The thing is, see that turkey above? I saw it was 59 cents a lb and remembered my mother said she cooked a turkey breast in her crockpot because there were just two of them.
I grabbed it WITHOUT thinking,  a few squash, veggies and for Bob stove top dressing.
I forgot........
I HATE TO COOK but how hard could it be to slap it in the crockpot and wait all day.

I forgot...To Check the Size of the turkey breast, it turned out to be twice the size of my crockpot.

I forgot I have never cooked a turkey in my life.
I forgot I had no pan in which to cook it.
I forgot it had to thaw in the fridge for 48 hour.
It worked out ok because Saturday am I went to WM and bought a throw away pan, which used to be ONE DOLLAR when I last bought one in 2006 for Bob To Cook a turkey, and after that we ate out.

YIKES! Sunday AM I fought that turkey breast and am ashamed of the words I said while fighting it.
It said in writing 2 to 3 and 1/2 hours at 325 degrees
HA! at 3 hours it was not done, I upped the temp for another 30 minutes and got in a fight with Bob because I was using the thermometer to check if it was done and he was saying don't check it, 4 hours is plenty and it will be so tough we can't eat it.
he also said I DON"T care if it says 165, ITS DONE
I said well come get it out and if the three of us die from salmonella blogville will never know what happened to me.
He said it was good, I gagged on it because when I see meat or chicken not cooked and cook it i can't eat it. HE says that is all in my mind, if I can eat it when someone else cooks it, is just silly.
We ate it on Saturday, today as I type is Sunday, and we are not sick YET.
The last time I ever read and AD and also the last time I ever buy a turkey breast
At least we have lefts overs and will have had Thanksgiving FOOD all 4 days before Thanksgiving.

I came in the door from the doctor appt. Bob said why did it take so long? I forgot to say  I also stopped in Hobby Lobby. I said because I went to Aldi.
he said What's Aldi? Where is it?
Why did you go there?
I told you to remember all that I told him and if you can't, start over at the top. HA HA

I sympathize completely, but I don't hate to cook because I don't do it. At least you got some blog fodder out of it. 😀❤️

we had such an adventure with a goose... we got it once as a thank you for help...it did not fit in the oven, so a smart man said we put it outside on our terrace so it can thaw and then we can cut it apart... we forgot something too... the berds, who thought it is a free x-mas meal, the half frozen goose looked like the loser of a shooting party with machine gun kelly ;O(

Well that was some trip to the doctors. I haven't been in an Aldis in years. When the kids were younger and living at home I would shop there because it was just way cheaper to feed kids who ate you out of house and home.

Hello Sandra, I buy some things in Aldi, because they are cheaper and just as good as the other large supermarkets, and in some cases better. Your escapade with the turkey was fun to read but I'm sure not fun in reality.

ps I have an appointment with the eye specialist on Friday!

Hello Sandra,

Hubby and I shop at Aldi's for certain items, they are cheaper than some stores. I would like to try a small turkey breast in the crock pot one day. That is a great price for the turkey breast. Hubby likes dark meat turkey and I like the white meat. I assume the road to the beaches is crowded with the winter visitors now. Take care, have a great day!

Aldi is a German s/mkt and has been around the UK for a long time. As has Lidl, which is owned and run by the brother of the fellow who does Aldi. They compete against each other to bring prices lower. Great for the consumer? Well... given the stuff is from the same sources as other s/mkts one has to wonder who is losing out. The answer, it has to be said, is the food producers. Luckily, in Dunoon, I don't have to fight my conscience on that as we have only two s/mkts and they both respect the farmers and bakers and butchers with fair prices to them... mind you, I am awaiting my grocery delivery even as I type and have discovered that due to the driver shortage, several items are entirely unavailable! YAM xx

I cannot do.turkeys...o dont even want to be in the same house ine is being cooked in. There is a certain stage of the cooking where I want to puke if I smell it. Roger is the only one that likes turkey!

Around my neck of the woods just about every store is cheaper than Walmart. And more congenial staff.
Too bad you couldn't have cut it(turkey) to fit.

Girl, I'm laughing SO hard! I, too, share a (not-so) exaggerated fear of under-cooking poultry or pork. Several years ago everyone was raving about doing turkey breasts in the crock-pot. Of course, I had to try it, too. The result was disgusting; even Tom said, "Throw it away."

Nope, never have tried shopping at Aldi's. Probably on account it's geographically underdesirable. Well that, and I've an underlying suspicion if something's that much cheaper, is there something the matter with it?

The very first time I cooked a whole turkey 20+ years ago I had no idea there was a bag of giblets inside. Mama was going to make the dressing and gravy. She asked where is the giblet bag? Lesson learned. Some turkey breast have a thermometer on them that pops out when they are done.

Good grief, what an adventure...
Never thought of doing a turkey breast in the crock pot.
Love the smell of a turkey roasting in our oven. We usually get a huge on about 24 pounds...that way we have gobs of leftovers. the thing is to remember to give it enough time to thaw completely and as someone said..Remove the giblet bag first!
One year I set my oven timer to start roasting while we were at church. It never came on and our dinner with lots of company...had to wait an extra 3 hours for dinner to be done..I can laugh about it now but oh my I wasn't a happy camper that year. Never used my automatic starter timer again...

This year I actually bought a precooked turkey breast from Costco. No muss, no fuss!

I do love that your worse experiences make for some great and funny stories....but wish you didn't have to go through them!

Oh my goodness! Well, we have turkey breasts this year so I have taken note! I've been into Aldi but it's not close enough for a regular trip.

Have never been to Aldi although they are allover the place here. Always cook turkey breasts, never in a crockpot. An 8 lb. breast usually takes about 2.5-3 hours to cook at 350. But I like to stuff mine and I am doing two breasts for Thanksgiving, so still trying to figure out how long to cook them. I think I would like to spend my time in Hobby Lobby over Aldi anyday:)
