Our gate into our backyard, for Nature Friday

I wanted to answer this comment on my Peppermint Tea for IBS post yesterday.

Tigger has left a new comment on your post "Peppermint Tea, the wonders of it all":

Has your IBS got worse or better with age? Mine went through a few bad years and seems to have improved somewhat in the ladt 4 or 5 - which may be down to changed eating but i made no spevigic changes just adapted to what's available locally. It would be interesting to see if different cultures hzve different prevalsnce of IBS.

My first symptoms were 5 years ago at age 72. And not often until 2020 when the world shut down because of Covid. Answer is no not better with age, but better with research and finding out the triggers.

I did read in an article that for some it gets better with age, some it goes away entirely and some it is lifelong.  Mine got better with changes in diet and amount eaten at one time. The odd thing was when i was 230 pounds and eating poorly i did not have it. It all started when I stopped eating poorly and started to lose weight and the more weight, I lost the worse it got.  I think culture might have to do with it, because each country eats differently, both in amounts and type foods.

Here is a link I found today if anyone is interested in more info... HERE

Can you find Mr, and Mrs. Brown Anole?

He is a cutie! So your miserable choice is either have I.B.S., or gain weight, but not have it anymore. I have never heard the like! Seems like your colon does not like your diet.

Glad you have found something else that helps. Thanks for all the research. I have taken a lot of it on board. Thanks.

That sucks that it got worse when you lost weight! I'm glad it's getting better now.

All F can say is that she will have to do better spell checking when she has been doing one finger typing on the tablet late at night. She also wanted to comment that her IBS is much worse when she had had a course of dentistry that involved having to take anti-biotics. That took over 6 months to settle. And she read somewhere an academic's theory that humans should try to eat at least 30 different plant based foods in every week, and she has been doing that since we lived in Greece, with MUCH better outcomes for her IBS. It seems to be about feeding all the different kind of gut bacteria that you have lurking around in your digestive system. People with IBS have been shown to have less diversity of gut bacteria (no comment on whether that is cause or effect, or simply co-related), and there MIGHT be an argument for giving them all something to work on to maintain a healthy balance, and promote diversity of gut bacteria. (She doesn't count any plant starch in the 30 but nothing says you shouldn't - rice, spuds, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, corn, oats, etc - She does however count any herbs or spices she adds, and apparently different kinds of the same veg count as more than one - like red or green peppers, mung beans of black-eyed beans and so on - so three-bean salad is better than simply eating kidney beans). If nothing else it keeps her busy when she makes her shopping list to make sure she has enough different kinds of things in the Donkey at the end of the shopping trip. Have a nice weekend - I think we are going away somewhere again. xxx Mr T

Yep I spotted them both.
You would think it would be the other way around with the IBS where you would have problems when you were heavier.

Hello,

The diet has a big affect on my IBS. I am glad you have lost the weight.
I found the cute anoles. Have a happy day!

I'm just glad what you did was successful!!

I did see the cute couple. At least you could cut out foods and it helped, though I know that is not fun.

Love the photos! It's such a shame that the IBS came on with weight loss, but I'm glad you have found some relief with knowing what helps and what your triggers are.

I do see the Anole family. I had no idea they had a red throat or is it just the male?

I love that YOU love research! What a shame, you had to trade one 'issue' (weight) for another! It's almost like your body's mad you cut off its sugar supply and it decided to get back at you.

I spy Mr. & Mrs. Anole!

Yes, I do see them. And I too love that you are such a great researcher. The more we do our research and practise critical thinking in our lives, the better off we are. At any age.
