Fig, Ficus or Banyan on Nature Friday

Our home is about 20 minute drive from Selby Gardens. The trees today are Fig, Ficus, Banyan, all the same family and are from 2009-2010 archives.

The children playing give perspective to these beautiful, monstrous trees.
they also grow wild many of our preserves and a few around our city.

The red X, left corner my first Apartment here, Now A Senior Retirment Community for the Rich Folks.

The big red circle WAS the oldest and largest tree like the photo above, I covered the whole block and was there before I was born. Gone! they bulldozed it and paved it into a parking lot and built a small business center. A century old Tree Gone!

Inside the red circle was a tree much larger than the ones above the graphic.

My Feedly news gave me this article  this week.
Greenhouse gases reach levels not seen in over 4 million years
Removing grass and green living trees are a huge cause of these levels. Trees remove the Co2 and make the levels of gases drop. Remove the trees, the levels grow.
Removing trees and green living plants has lead us to the Heat and Cold we are now having on our planet.

Reminds me of that old Joni Mitchell song "They paved Paradise, & Put Up A Parking Lot." We are totally destroying the earth, that God gave us to care for. It has almost reached the point of no return. And don't get me started on how many animals are going extinct all the time. These trees are amazing. Of course, we have none like them anywhere here. I have seen them on T.V. though.

Those trees are amazing. How sad that the one was taken down for a parking lot.

I love banyans... and the loss of that great sage of a tree must surely have been noticed by those living close by - not just visually but environmentally. Or perhaps there are just too many folk who don't notice these things and convenience overrides commonsense... YAM xx

I love the big old trees, I can not imagine them taking that big banyan tree down to make a parking lot. Very sad! Take care, enjoy your day!

Hi Sandra,:=) What a great article! The tree with enormous roots is extraordinary. It's a great shame that the other tree was lost to a parking lot. Where there are trees, the air is purer, precisely because trees soak up carbon dioxide.

The tree you mentioned is a Ceder, I'm not sure what kind, but it is very tall, hugely tall, with huge cones.

That's criminal!!! I'm getting all het-up, wondering who thought it okay to bulldoze that magnificent tree. I was just thinking of that same song Ginny mentioned.

I don't think the one at the Edison home is as huge as these, but a trip to visit that Banyan was always something I looked forward to when we'd visit my uncle in Florida.

Those huge trees are amazing. It's upsetting when trees are cut down and land is concreted over. Our city has a reputation for being a green city with hundreds of trees. There was a successful campaign to save our trees so important for a healthy environment.

Its so sad when people opt to get rid of greenery for pavement...

I do love the wonderful big trees in the first few pictures!

Greed is the great destroyer..
Love the old Banyan trees. As a kid I would have loved to climb all over those roots...lots of "pretend" in the making.
Feeling better today. Hoping we have turned the corner and can get back to life soon.

We have way too many people and not enough trees!

Those tress are so amazing. I love them!
That is very interesting information you found. So sad. Mark read something about the fact that if everyone planted a tree we could save our earth.

Those tree roots were gorgeous, and it breaks my heart. We had two trees in Kennesaw that were probably here as babies during the Civil War. They are gone with the wind!

WOW! Those trees are massive. It is sad to see an old tree being taken down.

I remember the banyan trees when I was in Hawaii. SO interesting and beautiful. Terrible to trade a tree like that for a parking lot!!

You introduced us to the artwork that is the buttresses of those banyan trees. Regreening our environments not only cleans the air it evens out temperature fluctuations and can even restore the conditions that encourage rain to fall and helps ensure moisture to be retained in the soil in the right measures (reduces run off and flash flooding). There are so many arguments for regreening. What stops us? Xxx Mr T and F

These trees are magnificent! I remember seeing them on our vacation. Ugh on the parking lot and the damage done to our environment.

Wow, those trees are quite impressive. And the children certainly add perspective to their size.
