Saving Dollars

With Savings flying out of the account recently, my mind is on saving $$$$$

Goodbye, Revitalift, $17 per jar
Hello, Ponds $6 per jar
Take a look at what you spend, how long it lasts, do the math for what you spend in a year.

Starbucks Venti $4:15 per cup, One cup per day, one year $1514.75
Coffee at home Three cups per day, 365 day a year, One Year $237.75
I do not buy Starbucks, but I can change from the $10.69 to the $6.79 and save that way.

Cleaning Supplies take a big chunk of money.
Spray Bottles of Wool-lite Rug Cleaner, a necessity with a dog in the house.

I informed my other half; I will not be buying expensive rug cleaner. When the supply in the cabinet is gone, that is it.
His reply was, what will we use?

Recipes from 5 Easy Tips DIY Carpet Cleaner

DIY rug cleaner, make your own by adding

1/2 and 1/2 White Vinegar and Warm water.
In a spray bottle.
If you want it to smell good, add salt and Lavendar oil.

I am allergic to scents but not peppermint oil so may try that.

Rug Spot Remover Recipe

This is good, I can't wait to try the spot remover. You are the new Heloise! And did you ever hear of a single other peron on earth with that name??

Vinegar in warm water plus a drop of washing up liquid (detergent) for washing (cleaning) windows- dry with scrunched up newspaper (if you can get it). Beats any commercial liquid window cleaner.

Lately, my motto for cleaning? I don't 😁.

I just use really hot water for all my basic cleaning and washing dishes - but I do have a purchased degreaser (with rhubarb and orange) if it is needed. It is moderately priced. I use non-bio capsules for my laundry, but just the supermarket own brand, which works fine and are nearly half the price of any branded. In fact, lately, I am dropping to supermarket own produce for quite a few things. Overall the quality drop has been negligible. Even the fresh pasta is impressing me... YAM xx

I grew up with a rather thrifty father and I picked up a lot of his habits such as always (almost) buying the generic brand instead of the name brand. I'm not a Starbucks coffee drinker either because I just can't see paying that much for a cup of coffee.
If you make that home made rug cleaner you'll have to let us know how well it works.

Hello,
I am not a fan of Starbucks coffee, I save my money making my own coffee at home. I do use vinegar and water for cleaning many things. Buying the store brands does save some money, but the quality still has to be there for me.
Take care, have a happy day!

I will save this rug recipe in case we get another pet.
I do drink Starbucks French Roast - on a pod from BJ's - 75 cents a cup. Rick does not. Just me.
I can give you a hack - hairspray takes off ink. Peroxide blood.
I have to think about the other.
Of course coupons.☺
Have a nice day.

My carpet cleaning hack's almost the same as yours -- 2 c. warm water + 1/2c. white vinegar + tablespoon (ea.) of blue Dawn and salt. I was skeptical at first, but it really does the trick!
Our cupboards are about 1/2 and 1/2 generic and brand names. As far as food goes, we learned our lesson last year when 'someone' wanted to save a few cents and bought the store brand diced tomatoes with seasoning. Bleah!

I'm always looking for ways to save on energy costs. Since our washer/dryer sit behind a bifold door in the kitchen, I'll almost never employ the dryer in the summer months and dry them on a rack out in the sunroom or the bath.

AMEN Sandra
My mother in law used Noxzema on her skin to wash and in the morning and evening to moisturize. Even into her 80's her skin was wrinkle free. Maybe good genes played a part too. For years I bought into the Clinque then I started having allergies. They declared it hypoallergenic. IT WAS NOT. I have used Aveeno
products for washing and moisturizing and hand lotion.

Hello Sandra,:=) I'm back after a one month break. I use the vinegar, with just a tad of Fairy liquid, in very hot water. It works really well, but I will try your tip for cleaning carpets. I'm a tea drinker, but I use the supermarket brand, because it's cheaper, but had to find one that made a good strong cup of tea. If I have a cup of coffee, I make it at home.If something is on promotion, I buy quite a few items, and still save money. Sometimes I use tooth paste to clean small items of silver, and then wash in warm soapy water, they turn out OK in an emergency.
So good to be in contact again.:=)

I do buy mostly store brands because of the cost. I won't change on T.P. though..Charmin for me all the way.
The only time I get Starbucks is when I have a gift card..which I used yesterday. Saved myself $5.00.
Use and recycle is my motto too.
Have to get the oil changed today..not doing that myself...using local business not our Honda dealership...that will cost an arm and a leg.

looks like your readers have plenty of tips. you can go a very long way cleaning at home with vinegar especially bathroom and toilet. F descales the washing machine with it too. A product called 'elbow grease' apparently works fairly well too. xxx Mr T

Wow! I learned a bunch from your post and all the comments today! I use Vinegar for most everything...I just tried the baking soda/Vinegar solution to clean one of my bathroom drains yesterday and it did a great job!

I'll have to try the home made carpet cleaning solution!

Some of these everyday things sure can add up in price. We all find ways to save.

I thought of one and just read through the comments...

I put two or three tablespoons of baking soda down one side of my kitchen sink. I keep the other side of the sink closed asI pour vinegar in after the baking soda. (I think keeping the other side with the stopper in it helps, but it is my own idea.)

After the bubbles etc start going down, I follow that with running water. Then go to the other side and put the baking soda, followed by vinegar...while keeping the other drain closed.

I do this now every so often, but originally did it because my sink was slow to drain. One of the first times I did it, It almost did not drain out at all but I have a little hand plunger that is for the kitchen sink only and I used it and I have never had another problem. I don't know what had gone down it in the first place because I do not put grease or anything like that down the drain.

How right you are, Sandra! There's many ways to save $ by making your own cleaning solutions. I do it for eyeglass cleaner: 3 parts rubbing alcohol, 1 part water and 1-2 drops dishwashing liquid. I recently made a stain remover using original Dawn (blue), hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Unfortunately, it did not remove the unknown stain on Grenville's t-shirt. I regularly use vodka (cheapest brand) in a spray bottle to clean our glass top stove (after first using detergent on a sponge). It also works on rug stains like blood or wine. I have also used vinegar and baking soda for other things, including cleaning and deodorizing the dishwasher and drains.

Baking soda is surprisingly efficient. I use very few cleaning products other than mild washing up liquid or soap.

Amber makes up a lot of her own cleaning solutions. I am partial to bleach and Pine Sol and Fabuloso. She uses none of these. Loved reading all the comments.
I am using face creams I find at TJ Max. When I am out of a night cream I use baby oil - the thick jell kind. I take my eye make up off with a tissue and Vaseline.

Hi Sandra. Well, I lost the follow on Bea's blog again and can't seem to get it back, so decided to visit you here. Great tips. Here's another one. I often want to use the oven but it heats up the house and uses a lot of gas. I have a small convection oven on the porch, so if what I want to back fits, it goes in there! Besides preheating super fast, it keeps the house from heating up from the oven. Be sure to set a timer...out of sight, out of mind! I also have to set it 25 degrees lower than my regular oven. Amy

That's a great idea on the rug cleaner and yes, most likely many of the store brands are made by the big name company anyway. You go girl!
