The first observance of Memorial Day was on May 30, 1868.
The holiday was then known as Decoration Day and was created to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the American Civil War
The Civil War was the deadliest of all American wars.
The most-accepted estimate was about 620,000 dead. A specific figure of 618,222 is often cited, with 360,222 Union deaths and 258,000 Confederate deaths. Info History.com

A day to remember and honor!
Take care, enjoy your day!
Australia honours its own (plus those from New Zealand) on ANZAC Day in April…..and also takes part in the worldwide November Remembrance Day services. Sadly many decry these as days of glorifying war not honouring those who gave their lives for a cause
Beautiful american flag! Freedom has a price. We have to remember that and honor each year the memory of the Fallen.
Beautiful tribute to the fallen heroes.
Happy Memorial Day--we are so lucky to live in this country. xo Diana

Splendid - sobering - post. After watching last night's National Memorial Day concert (PBS), I can't bring myself to say "Happy" Memorial Day.
Thank you for saying I can share your photos. Both are wonderful, but the second one really grabbed my heartstrings.
