In my post Ducks and More Ducks, a week ago, I told you that 2 Mallards, Mama and Juvenile baby came to stay with us. The came on April 4th and are still here.
April 25th we heard a knock on the glass door and the one I called Mama, now called MR was crying at me. The Baby, or so I thought, had been gone for 2 days and I thought this duck was the Mama looking for the baby.
The Baby showed up that day, see below. Leg lame, part of the foot gone, no tail feathers and in ruff shape. Yes I Cried a little. For days I have watched them, the larger duck, now called MR and the small injured Baby, now called Misses, for Mrs.
They have both come every evening between 5 and 6, and slept in the pool all night, leaving around 8 am for the day.
Mrs is wounded, but she can swim, fly and drags herself one legged on the concrete. We think they have stayed because the wounded one needs easy access to water to escape, when Beau walks by she just falls off the side of the pool into the water.
they are not mallards, but mottled ducks, and the one above is the large male and below is the injured female.
We have been adopted. The male tickles me to death. Every sound or movement, even when the blinds are closed and I pull it aside to watch them, he looks me in the eye. Last night I had the verticals closed and would move from one blind to another to see if he knew, it was almost dark, and he eyed me at every blind.
If you enlarge this photo, you can see her foot and feathers. this was five days ago and she looks better each day.
If she gets to where she can't leave the yard, I will call Wild Life to come get her. She doesn't act like she is suffering or in pain.Don't worry about them harming the pool, it has been over a year since it has been maintained properly. its full of leaves on the bottom. It got out of control because it needs maintenance daily. I am now working on it myself but don't want to get it because Bob wants to get in it and he can't. I leave it this way so I have a reason to repeat to him 10 times a day why he can't get in the pool.
I am now caregiver for and this includes poop detail of an 1, lb 80 lb dog, 1, 140 lb female, 1, 165 lb male human and 2 ducks,

I love the reflection photo, and I can see the foot. I think they feel safer sleeping in the pool at nighttime, where no wildlife roams. I would hate to see them separated though!!
all the best for the ducks ... and hugs for you to take care of all you love...

Loved your Zen Color post from yesterday... and this post on the ducks. As you say, now the pool is anyway unusable, why should it not become a pond?!! They know they are safe with you... YAM xx
They must feel safe in your yard. Poor Mrs. I wonder what happened to her. Hope she continues to improve.
Poor ducks! - but lucky in that they found a safe haven in your garden & pool... ;)
I was wondering if you are feeding them? Do they go other places to feed during the day? I'm so sorry about the Mrs. Duck. I hope her foot gets better and some day they will be able to fly away to wherever ducks fly to, but I am happy they chose your place as a safe haven for now. They are certainly beautiful.
They have obviously found a safe haven in your yard, Sandra, and a caregiver, too. I suspect that in their own way they repay you with friendship. There is kinship between species. Take good care - of yourself and the ducks. Best wishes - David
Hello Sandra
Happy 1st day of May! The ducks feel safe and happy in your yard and pool. I would think the duck with the sore foot may still survive. I know you are caregiver to Bob and Beau, but make sure you take care of yourself too. Have a great day and a happy weekend.
Oh, that is so sad that she is injured. It just breaks your heart, I know. Being a caregiver is not for the faint of heart. I have hubby and TWO dogs that demand constant attention. Life sure turned out different than we thought it would, didn't it?! xo Diana
Poor baby duck, I am happy she has a place to recuperate and hope she heals up quickly!!
Big virtual hugs!
Beth
Yes, Sandra, you are a caring caregiver and it seems that the ducks know this as all of us blogger friends do by now. Hopefully, healing will continue but for now your pool is a safe haven.
Oh my goodness. I wonder did she get hit by a car, or if you lived out a bit I would think a coyote got a hold of her. They feel safe with you or they would not stay. Animals can recognize a kind soul and you are one.
Our ducks haven't visited yet this year. We hope Mrs continues to get better.
How neat that they have landed and hanging out in your back yard...on the other hand, I feel bad for mama duck. I hope she heals and that they can get back up in the sky... I do know what you mean with the pool...Sam is unable to take care of ours and so we have had to hire a pool guy to start coming...Actually, he is coming today. Prayers for you and Bob each day...
I have my paws crossed that Mrs. Duck will get better soon. It's good that you have someone to call if she can't leave on her own.
Oh, how my heart is aching for MR and her Mrs! Do they eat Beau's dry food or specialty stuff? I love how MR knows when you're watching him.
I never fail to be amazed at the animal kingdom's senses.
Oh dear I'm sorry you have extra beings to care for.
they are cute though
Hugs cecilia
Oh Sandra, they needed you too and you can't turn them away. I think they bring you some joy too just like Beau and Bob of course.
You do have a lot going on there. Hugs and love, sandie
I’m so glad you have the pool for them, and that you are letting the pool go. You already have too much to do. Please take care of yourself. We love you! ❤️
Yes, they hopefully won't be separated, they are so darn cute. Thanks for your kindness to those sweeties. Hugs from all of us!
I’m sorry for the Mrs. I hope she can recover and yes, it looks like you’ve been adopted. That’s a great pool strategy, by the way.
God sent the ducks to you because He knew you'd care for them...
hugs
Donna
It is a safe haven for them to heal at your place, and they know you wouldn't hurt them so will stay for at least a while. So nice to be adopted, I would love to be able to visit ducks daily in my own back yard.
Hi Sandra :)
It was so nice to see a comment from you today. Thank you Sandra I appreciated your visit when I know you have so much on your plate, but you also have ducks in your pool, how cool is that! The injured female feels safe there and will probably stay until she has completely recovered., In fact Mr and Mrs both feel safe, Bet it feels good to have their trust.
All the best
Take care
Sonjia.
Hi hi hi! Ojo here! You have DUCKS!! Can Cyrus and I come watch?!?
It is so incredibly touching that these Mottled Ducks have chosen your pool as their safe haven while "Mrs." recovers from her injuries. The way the male watches you through the blinds shows such a high level of intelligence and trust in his new "caregivers.
I told you that you are the most kind person and the LORD knows who sent the MOMA and the rest to your save Haven shelter. I see you have CHATTY CRONE still on here ANN. I cant seem to get intouch with her. She was a sweet lady. I Can remember her life and GRANDSON how a beautiful a grandma she was. Can you ask her how old he must be now. I Think she had a dog. She was kind and still is like you. We have beautiful day outside.
I'm so sorry to hear about the baby. I'm praying for them. I like that you are watching them so closely and that it's okay that they are in the pool.
Those ducks know a good thing! And I think you secretly are thoroughly enjoying them, kind of sad though that the Mrs is injured, hope she heals up well.
And yes I get it about poop-patrol...
This is one of those stories that begins as simple backyard wildlife watching and slowly turns into something much more personal. It is hard not to become emotionally attached once animals start returning every evening, especially when one of them is injured and clearly relying on the safety of your pool and yard.
I can completely understand why you cried when Mrs returned injured. Seeing an animal suddenly appear vulnerable after watching them healthy and active for days can hit surprisingly hard. But it is encouraging that she is still swimming, flying, eating, and improving gradually. Animals often have an incredible instinct for adapting and surviving, even with injuries that would completely discourage humans.
