Once Upon A Moss Rose

Learning with Sandra. Once Upon a time, Sandra bought a .99 moss rose about the year 2001 and Bobby Appleseed planted it in a big clay pot and it grew and grew and grew and we loved it.

Along came the hard winter of 2010 and it froze to death. All that was left was ugly trashy looking brown stuff.

Sandra said  "Bobby, I am going to buy a new moss rose for this pot, you can dump the dirt out"

Bobby Said "NO! leave it alone, it is not dead"

Sandra "it IS dead"

So Bobby Appleseed watered the dirt for about a month, day after day he watered the dirt (Sandra said many times, it is DEAD Bobby said it is NOT) and Behold it grew up to be this.

See the small square on the right of the photo? thas is a small plant in a small pot.

Did you know if it dies the roots stay there and will come back with watering? Now you Know.

Also, did you know that if a little piece like this falls on the ground and you pick it up and lay it on top of a tiny little clay pot full of dirt it will GROW?  Now you Know.
Look what this tiny little piece created just in the past few months.... I brought it in and sat on table JUST FOR YOU
Note: there IS a pot under that plant.

I love Moss roses, they are so cheerful. My hubby asked me a couple of weeks ago if we needed to remove a dead rosebush. I told him nope, it's alive. Leaves started appearing on it this week. I'm a believer!

Never doubt Johnny Appleseed. They are a great plant. I love anything that is easy to grow and hard to kill.

Lovely. Not sure I've seen this exact plant before. It reminds me however of another one whose name I just now can't remember... Ah well!

A beautiful Plant and a wonderful story.
My neighbor Derrick has decided to plant a small garden on the lot next to our house. He tilled it yesterday. I got pics. I will blogg them.

Dear Sandra, this lovely post made me smile, both because of the way you told this story and because of its happy end. :-) I am glad your husband was persistent. These roses are really gorgeous. Just yesterday I planted some flowers in my flower pots and was very sorry when I saw that this spring my trumpets didn’t give a signs of life. However, I decided to leave it alone hoping that it will come back with watering. After this post of yours I start to believe that there is a hope for my lovely trumpets. :-)

The moral of the story is listen to Bobby Appleseed. I'm sure he's related to my mother who could break off a twig, stick it in the dirt and grow a tree.

No, I didn't age back in time, I grew younger! = )

Best,
Bonnie

Wow, those are beautiful, I have never seen a real one. So if a plant dies for any reason, it will comes back? What about over watering? And how can you tell if it will or not, do you look at the roots? I wish you guys lived around here, maybe we would have a flower garden then.

Now isn't this the same as Porchulaca? I did grow that here years ago and it is a beautiful ground cover. Very lovely and it is nice when something comes back to surpise us after being in a coma!! (smile)

I don't think I ever heard of moss roses but I want one. That is really pretty. Now Sandra, should you really be arguing with Mr. Appleseed?...lol He sure seems to know his stuff when it comes to plants.

They are sturdy little plants ... and so colorful.

Sandra, add me to those who had never seen or heard of the moss rose plant. It sort of reminded me or coreopsis in that it looks like it's a succulent. Maybe that explains why it refused to die off or maybe it was just Bob's persistence.
