Sugar or Sugar or Sugar?

It has been a year of learning what I can and can't eat after giving up processed sugar and white flour.. I want to share my new info with you. For several months I would wake up to what is called Cocks Crow Diarrhea. Bouts of gastrointestinal distress, flatulence, bloating and diarrhea. This only last for about an hour, but kept me from going to the YMCA to exercise in the pool. A total mystery to me.

A  blogger stated in a comment that she is allergic to sugar. I am a cyber detective and dove into research on sugar allergy. Wow! if you want to know just type Sugar Allergy in Google Search!

I found that mine is not allergy, but Sugar Intolerance or it doesn't absorb properly. Before I went on the new food plan, I had the same thing but not as often. Every time I went on a sugar binge but did not know why.

I thought but I don't eat sugar.... or so I thought. The photo above shows the sweetners I use in cereal, coffee, plain Greek yogurt and the CULPRIT IS  Cool Whip... All Cool Whip..

I had been using frozen cool whip, by the spoon for a sugar free snack. Also putting it on fruit, dip and apple slice, pineapple slice.

I checked my food diary that I keep by this rule. "You Bite it Write it". (try this and see what you eat each day)
On each of the days I ate the cool whip the next morning I would miss the pool.

I checked the ingredients in ALL Cool Whip and each of them has sucrose, fructose and all the ose words.  If the word ends with OSE it is a type of sugar. Cool Whip is sweetened with sucrose and sorbitan which is a sister to sorbitol. (I can not eat sugar free candy because sorbitol gives me instant gas and cramps)

I was Shocked to the core to find that the saccharin in Sweet n Low  that I have used for 40 years,
has dextrose added because saccharin is bitter by itself, Stevia in the Raw is not raw plant extract but has dextrose added and Nectasweet is saccharin with cellulose. The small print is hidden and the big print makes you think it is sugar free.

Because I gave up sugar, I added these to my foods and drinks and each day I was flooding my body with OSE words..... in other word just another form of sugar. I am now using less of these and more of Honey, RAW Local honey. Not processed.

When we think we are not eating sugar we might be. Sugar is listed in almost everything processed and this link will let you know which names to look for.

Click here for 56 names of Sugar  below i have included a few links if you want to research further.

INFO BELOW FROM WEB

What are the symptoms of sugar intolerance?
Sugar intolerance and malabsorption has been found to be an issue for some individuals causing gastrointestinal distress, flatulence, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue and anemia. There are many different types of sugars and it is important to pin point which one is the culprit if you suspect intolerance or malabsorption.

I totally agree with all of this, and am so glad you found your culprit. YES, the sugar substitutes all have their own side effects. A lot of them say in small print that eating too much gives yo diarrhea. Honey! It is antibacterial and healing. Plus, sugar digests fast and whacks your pancreas. But honey digests very slowly so is not a shock to your body. We have both cut our sugar WAY back. One thing we never thought about is our oatmeal. The flavored kind has maybe triple the sugar of the plain. And dry cereal, wow it can have a lot. But it is easy to find low sugar ones like Chererios.

I have used the artificial sweeteners in coffee and tea for years. The last several years I've been using Stevia. This is very interesting. I don't have all the symptoms you listed here but I have some and now I'm wondering.

The thing to remember is that anything which is sweet contains sugar in some form. Honey is mainly fructose (about 38%) and glucose (about 32%), with remaining sugars including maltose, sucrose, and other complex carbohydrates. What is different is the delivery to the digestive system - it has to work to extract those sugars and thus the digestion is more thorough, whilst the majority of processed sugars are stripped of any natural fibres which slow digestion - because the aim is to provide the sugar hit most folks are addicted to. Honey is, indeed, far and away the best form of sweetening of the sugar options. In practice though, (homoeopath and nutritionist), I always recommended stevia - the unmussed kind. If you want to purchase stevia and want the purest product possible, always buy a powdered product that is 100 percent pure stevia extract (not stevia powder, which indicates it is a blend and not pure extract.) This, for example. It isn’t cheap to say the least, but just the fewest of grains makes sufficient sweetness, so the pure stuff goes just as far in using less. It does taste the best and is the cleanest option possible. Another good choice is to choose pure liquid stevia and choose alcohol-free versions if possible. This will ensure the product won’t cause any glycemic or digestive issues or trigger any possible reactions. And of course, if you have a green thumb, you can always grow your own! Raw honey is good stuff though - how wonderful to have somewhere close by to purchase it! YAM xx

I had heard someone talking about this recently. Thanks for the detailed info. I got on Atkins bars and drinks a while back, and I was losing weight, but having terrible stomach aches, and also a skin condition flare-up.

I was just telling a friend the other day it ought to be illegal to say stuff is sugar free...abd have told Roger for years that all the sugar free stuff is not good for him.

So interesting and great information. I have been reducing my sugar and using the pink packets in my coffee each morning. I am also trying to learn about reading labels. This info is very helpful!

Hello, this is a great post and very informative. I noticed there is even sugar in our 1% milk. It is hard to stop all sugars, when products seem to be almost hiding the fact it is there. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy your day!

Hello Sandra!:) So glad you discovered just what was causing all your discomfort. Honey is a healthier option than using sugar or sweeteners. This is a most informative post, for the uninitiated ( which lets face it, is most of us) into the complexities of sugar in our diets. Great post!:)

Oh my word...............this is amazing and bravo on your research.
sorbitol that is in lots of 'sugar free' things. There is a type of Yoplait that I cannot tolerate...I know this within minutes of eating it. I'm pretty sure it was their whipped.

None of us really know what we are eating and drinking. Now that Tom has to eat low fat I am constantly amazed at how much fat there is in most foods. Likewise you have found this out with sugar.

Wow!! What an eye opener! How horrible that your Cool Whip splurges have been the culprit. Not fair! I'm glad you figured it out!

this is fascinating Sandra. I have never used sugar or subs in coffee or any kind of sweeteners.

I do know that giving up cold cereal even like Kellog's Special K made a huge difference in my well being.

I was breaking out in strange blotches on my face and my blood sugar spiked ad then went low and I was feeling shaky and had to eat something.

Hardly use Cool Whip except in a recipe for yummy cookies.

Now I know why when I do use a creamer in my coffee on occasion, I feel lousy afterward.

The more I cut out of my diet the better I feel and when I do eat some of the no-no's I pay for it.

What a life we live...onward in the weight loss and forward to feeling better. (:0)

Cool Whip? Say it isn't so!!!
Seriously, I'm so glad your cyber detective leanings led you to post this info.
As soon as he wakes up, I'm sharing with Tom; only the other day I suggested he might want to switch the granulated sugar for honey ...and he just looked at me like I'd grown a second head. LOL!

Thank you for the info, Sandra. They make the print so small in the ingredients these days - I spend a lot of time at the grocery store reading labels! You sure have been an inspiration with your healthy weight loss.

I seldom if ever use a sweetener but that is very interesting how they put those things into our products. My dad has had issues with this too! Raw honey is a good choice.
