the only lighthouse close to us now, is on an island that requires a boat.
I don't do boats
SOOO
Hunting Island State Park, in SC, an hour drive from our home in Savannah GA... In 1976
Daddy, and my boys and their Dad climbed to the top. Mother could not climb it and I WOULD not climb it. We stood at the bottom of the steps and I screeched, Hold His Hand, don't let him hang off, do not run...etc etc.
HERE is the website, it has a video if you want to see the island.
Per their website.
The historic lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park is the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina.
For an admission of $2, visitors can climb the 167 steps and walk around the observation deck for a lofty view of the barrier island and surrounding seascape.
CHILDREN MUST BE AT LEAST 44" TALL TO CLIMB THE LIGHTHOUSE.
wonder why???

I am a Savannah native and have a memory connected to the beach behind this lighthouse.
I was 15, my Dad and Mom and brother and my cousin, spent the morning on that beach in sight of the lighthouse. Daddy fell on the oyster shells, slicing his knee to the bone.
Mother drove the 30 minutes to the doctor office, Brother was crying Cousin was crying, Daddy was holding a towel on his knee and I was screaming at Cousin and Brother, Shut Up! he is OK, it is mother that is upset and she can't drive with you screaming.
Those days, no ER visit, just stratight to the family doc to get it sewn up.

Above is The only other Lighthouse I did not climb but saw
and it is Ponce de, Leon Inlet in New Smyrna beach. We visited it back in Mid 80's which was PRE digital camera, so no photos
You can see it HERE on their website

I love your memories of these more than I do the lighthouses themselves! What great stories! Seems like you were the sensible one of the family.I have never seen a single lighthouse. Kid's having to be a certain height...they have these rules for carnival rides as well. With the three girls in tow, it makes for problems with the various rides they want to go on.
I love these lighthouses and have visited Tybee Island before. Also, some 40 years ago I visited Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in NC. Hope you have a good day.
I like all of them. Only a $2 admission to go to the top of the one near you. The one here charges $6 to go to the top.

Such iconic buildings. I love looking at them but haven't got the climbing stamina to go up them now. YAM xx
Great memories and pretty lighthouses. I have not seen these, I will add them to my list of want to see. Enjoy your day!
Oh, I love lighthouses and would like to travel around and see more of them! Beautiful photos and memories! Sounds like you've always been a 'take charge' kind of gal...I love it!
Enjoyed your read and memories today. I have seen a couple lighthouses and they are so awesome - to think of what their responsibilities were. And do you remember the movie Pete's Dragon?
Love, sandie
Tybee is gorgeous. I've heard of that Island it is kind of a destination Island now. What memories you have of it. LOL Loved the part about you telling the screamers to be quiet...
Thank you for joining us today...on this wonderful Blogville lighthouse day!
Hugs madi your bfff
I have never seen a Lighthouse in the furs and that Tybee Island one does look just the place to visit....although maybe without the oyster shells?

I love lighthouses and stories about lighthouse keepers. I have never visited one. Thanks for all the photos.
I have only seen a few east coast lighthouses, and they were in New Jersey...Hopefully one day. I have made a note to myself not to walk on the oyster shells tho ;-).
Thanks for hopping aboard today!!
I wonder if anyone becomes a bit disoriented and/or dizzy on the way up … then, to be thrust outside ALL the way up there? No thank-you-very-much!
I had to smile at your hushing your brother and cousin on the way to the E.R., even as a child you took responsibility. Falling apart can wait, right?
I am like you - no climbing steep narrow stairs for me... Out here, we have fire towers. There's one right along one of my favorite riding routes. It's standing there ready for anyone to climb it. I tried a few years ago, and I made it only about 5 steps up (open and steep steps). Nope, it's not happening.
I love your memories... although they don't sound like happy memories!!
I love lighthouses and remember the last time I climbed one my legs had turned into jelly. They were literally shaking. I just admire them from below. Great post, must have been quite a day after your dad fell, felt his pain and your mother's stress, all the kids, you included, no doubt. Smiled at your brother's comment.
Just reread that. Not your brother, your comment. Yes you were the wise one :)
I love lighthouses but have only seen a few in person. I have never climbed to the top of one. That is some story about your dad's knee!!
