TAPS

My friend Myra, commented on a post of sunrise photos, that she adores sunrise, but sunset always makers her a little sad.

My MADsnapper brain darted off to find the lyrics to TAPS because the comment made me here the 4 notes of a bugle playing the TAPS at end of day. TAPS at a funeral always makes me cry.
Sing it with me now.
Day is done
Gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
All is well
Safely rest
God is nigh.

I am sure at the end of the day, these soldiers were ready to hear TAPS played . The song was written during a battle in the civil war

I found the most interesting post about the history of TAPS. It is on The Camping Family.  The photos I used are from my visit to Civil War Enactment in Parrish Florida in 2012. PHOTOS HERE in prior posts.

Well, I don't care if the first (history) version is true or not.... that seized my heart. No matter how some 'romanticize' the Civil War, I understand there were many cases of brother-against-brother, son v. father.

Like Cecilia, I didn't realize there were words to TAPS. A tear-jerker, for sure. Thanks for the shout out and the lesson! Every day's a school day!

PS - These sepia photos are really good.

I guess the song and words could make us sad. I've never given it much thought but like you said I'm sure the soldiers looked forward to the end of the day.

These photos look like they could almost be from the original time. Don't you wish you felt like getting out and going and taking photos like we used to. I still do...well, won't finish that thought. At least not publicly.

What a lovely blog! I am looking forward to going backward to enjoy some of your days gone by. I love TAPS. I learned to play it on the trumpet when I was in our high school band. It's a beautiful piece, but it does make me sad.

So much to love here today! I loved learning all about TAPS. I think my favorite part was the origin of the word. I am glad the original story was not true, it was too sad. I KNEW these were the pictures of your reenactment, they look like from an epic movie. I also love that you are keeping the house as your header...it makes me smile every time I visit.!

Well I suppose a sunset is rather sad. Although if you have sunsets like Ginny does there is a whole lot of beauty in that sadness.
TAPS always gives me goosebumps when I hear it at a funeral

HAHA...I like SUNSETS best only cause I seem to see more of them. I usually don't get out early enough to see SUNRISES. Although I am up now, I will be in the house getting ready for work so I will miss it again. TAPS, makes me sad also. I had read that years ago...love history. The furbabes thank you for coming by to say hi.

I love your new header. We used to sing taps at various camps in my youth. Cool memories.
