Gray Matter, Matters

I read in AARP magazine this month, that anything we have to learn, or study or concentrate on, makes our gray matter (brain) grow new cells. Seems as we age the gray stuff starts to shrink and messes with our cognitive abilities.
I picked the not so good photo below of the berries on the kitchen table as a project to use in Photoshop. I used to be really good with PS but along came PicMonkey and I stopped using it and now have forgotten a lot of what I knew...
Spent about 40 minutes figuring out how to sharpen parts of the pic and frame and use dodge/burn
I will be spending some time several times a week straining the brain.
This month had a lot of good health things in it. Might show up HERE now and again

The article said exercise grows new cells, and housework counts.
I told Bob as I cleaned the sliding glass doors, I am not cleaning, I am growing my gray matter, and I need to work faster, because it is shrinking more each day.

overexposure on purpose to see what I could do

I am quite fond of these fake berries.

I also love "brain gymnastics"! By reading a lot, doing sudoku or crossword puzzle and sometimes "playing" with the numbers, it helps to keep the gray matter young!
Have a happy weekend, Sandra!

The old saying goes...if you don't use it, you lose it.

Oh no, that's why my head hurt. The gray matter was shrinking. I guess I need to start working on growing new cells.

Hello,

I guess I need to start adding more gray matter. I never liked photoshop but picmonkey was easier to use. Have a great day!

Oh, yes, I am a huge fan of stretching the little greys! I love puzzles of all sorts or inventing poems and stories and all that stuff. YAM xx

My 93 yr old aunt is a good example. She gives credit to daily crossword puzzles. This past week she new carolers were coming so she had two trays of cookies ready that she had baked.

I recently started writing Haiku to go with some of my photos. If nothing else, counting the syllables should grow some gray matter.

Applauding and standing ovation!! I a million % agree with this post
and YAY you for posting. We need a reminder to stay activity mentally and physically, (I read a quote from a PT once, motion is lotion), as we get 'younger'!! I must have a ton of new brain cells after teaching myself to
quilt. Love the berry photos

Gosh, I needed to see this! My poor mother was so concerned at the possibility of getting AD. Religiously, she'd do the word scrambles, crosswords- and even took to putting Apple Cider vinegar in her drinking water. Me, on the other hand? Guilty of LBS (lazy brain syndrome) -- on all counts. I won't spend $$$ on Photoshop software, but there's plenty of other stuff I could start doing.

Good afternoon, Her Madness! I love the berries and want to get them? Did they come with the leaves? Where and when did you get them? WM? I am going today and will look for them. So much here I LOVE, good info plus something to shop for! AARP... we do not belong to it anymore, but used to. So I would be really glad for you to post good tidbits from it. I did not know this! I had thought the only thing to make you grow new brain cells were things like puzzles. My brain has a lot of white matter and it is growing. This is from years of high blood pressure, even tho I have always taken meds for it. This is what my neurologist told me. Beautiful post plus great info today!!!

Well done!!
As someone said...use it or loose it...
Thanks for saying housework is growing gray cells... I will keep on saying that to myself as I vacuum and clean the bathroom.
Decorating that tree of mine certainly added a few new cells...lots of work.
Dinner event at son and daughter in laws this afternoon will encourage the cells too.
50 family and extended family are coming. I sure am going to try to get a few photos. Hard with so many people though.
The food is going to be more than delicious...everyone is bringing something. Lots of Norwegian goodies too.
There goes the diet for sure..

Good looking pictures. One of the reasons I force myself to learn new photo editing and even taking pictures, is to keep my mind sharp.

Your berries make for beautiful photos. I heard that learning another language is excellent mental gymnastics.

Something about my gray hair must have attracted me to your post about gray matter. It really doesn't matter what we do ... just do! Sometimes I get discouraged because I don't feel I do anything well ... just piddle here and there. Your work with the pictures is lovely. I do some things in Gimp and Inkscape but haven't mastered much technique. If I follow a tutorial, mine never looks like it should. Anything that keeps me away from housework is worth the while.
