Kmart is closing

I stepped in K-Mart this week and was shocked to see Clearance signs on everything in the store. Store closing signs shocked me. Somehow I missed it in the news that our last store is closing. I quickly bought $60.00 worth of merchandise for only $30.00.... all things I needed, not wants.

When I moved here in 1984, our town had 4 K-Marts. The last one left is closing in Feb. The employee told me there will be only 80 K-Marts left open in the USA and 80 Sears.

Sears is from my youth, K-Mart from my childrens youth. Amazon and Wal-Mart are the big guys in town for now... I wonder what will be next that will close these giants down...

Maybe the future generation will jump on a space ship and shop at Moon Mart or Mars-Mart.

K Mart went out of business a year or so ago. All the ones around here closed quite awhile ago. They started going under shortly after they bought Sears. That was hard to believe, and a bad idea on their part. Now Sears is gone too. And remember Montgomery Wards? Toys r Us are all gone too, that is so sad. They said that WM and Amazon were too much competition. I hated the K Mart here, because they only EVER had one or two checkouts open, and did not care if the lines were a mile long. Undoubtedly they could not afford to hire enough people to open more checkouts. And WM was always better. Soon there will only be two big department stores left...oh wait, that has already happened. WM and Target are left.

Yes it is sad to see stores closing because Mega Stores are taking over. That causes lack of competition and they can choose any price they like. Let alone a narrower variety although saying that I realise Amazon and WM do have a big variety. We don't have Walmart here ...yet. Amazon has just arrived. We still have Coles and Woolworths.

I have never cared for any of the so-called discount stores. (I don't mind the $ store for holiday crafts and decorations) But, the last K Mart in South Texas closed a couple of years ago. It's online shopping that's forcing closures. At least that's what I think.

... and they say the economic crisis was over! Then why do they close?

Hello,

Most of our K-marts closed a while back, Sears too. Now it is JC Penny's and some other local department stores. They are not doing well. It is sad to see these stores closing.

I haven't thought about K-Mart in ages! Phoenix had a couple, but both closed a few years ago … unfortunately, they were both located in 'sketchy' parts of town. No matter how good the cost savings, I think a big part of their undoing was customer NON-service.
Sad to see icons of mine and son's childhoods going by the way; and I suppose I'm partly to blame.

One of my grandsons thinks I shop at Mars Mart already and in a way that's what shopping online is for us Boomers. My husband complains with each Amazon purchase....he's a civil engineer and sees the decline in jobs with the city do to not buying local. A crazy world we live in! (We lost our Kmart many moons ago. Glad you saw it one last time before closing. I miss ours.)

Sad, but our K-Marts closed years ago. I think in the future - we will never leave home - do shopping and living on our internet - but how will we make money?

Like everyone else has said..our local K Mart closed a few years ago and Sears more than that.
I agree with Ginny, our Kmart was awful..poorly managed, apathetic salespeople and it was kind of a mess...
I really hate seeing jobs going down the tubes and I like really seeing the merchandise not just hoping it's going to be nice.

Your seasons of the shopping life match mine. Unlike Ginny's and Photowannabe's Kmart experiences, ours was great. It closed down many many years ago when it still seemed to be going strong. Not sure why. Now the space is Planet Fitness, and a Goodwill store.

Kmart is coming right to a close everywhere. Just one more thing going away.

We used to have a K-mart a few hours from here, actually there were several in that city, but they have all been closed a long time ago now.

The last of the K-mart stores in this area closed a couple years ago. I remember when I was growing up, shopping there with my mom and then that's where I always shopped when my kids were little. I hate that there are so few choices for places to shop now. There used to be so many different places you could go. Back in the day there was Woolworths, Murphys, Grants and a few others. Now Walmart is taking over everything.

Not even sure where the closes K mart would be. I was in a Wal-mart I thought it was pretty slow, for this time of year.
I guess most people shop on line.

I think Walmart pretty much put the others out of business! I like the Dollar stores now. Easy to park and you don't have to walk for miles inside the store. Lots of people shop exclusively online now, too! What is the world coming to??

Ours closed this year too. I hadn't gone in there in years cause it was a total mess. I'm not surprised it closed. Our walmart now takes the total mess prize. I'll have to see how long that lasts.

I can't even tell you the last time I even passed a K-mart store here in California.
