National Zoo Day

Today is National Zoo Day. I have not been to a zoo in 40 years. But in 2010, the Petting Zoo came to the assisted living facility that I volunteered at.  My job was taking each goat, chicken to each resident and letting them hold and love on them. JOY at the zoo from their wheel chairs. And my joy from watching and hugging on the critters... Be sure to Pop over to Big Boys Blog FourPawsETC to see more pics.

I have always been afraid of chickens, this one I carried around with no problem. The fat lady with the monkey is ME..  All of the animals were rasied from the day of birth being loved and petted by the children of the zoo owners.

Wonderful, wonderful pictures! I think I remember the first one, but the rest are new. The first one is so sweet! And these pics show us something profound I think. The need for love in all ages and all creatures. That love can tame wildness, too. I love the little hedgehog, and the picture of a happy you.

As I was looking at these pictures I was thinking how calm all the animals were being held. Then you mentioned they were all raised with love and attention. I imagine that seeing all these animals was a real treat for the residents.

How wonderful! Cute one of you with the pet monkey. Thank you for letting me know it was National Zoo Day today. I have another post with photos of flamingos from another zoo we visited while on vacation.

I'm finding it REALLY hard to come up with words to express how wonderful these pictures make me feel! That first juxtaposition between old and new … I keep staring at it and smiling. Life, in a nutshell.

Do you know if this "Zoo" is continuing its tradition? I'd be there in a heartbeat if I could. :)

Well good memories - I do see that the elderly sure do like animals and visitors - I remember when you went there - and you were beautiful.

How wonderful for the people at assisted living. The photos of them cuddling the goats are precious.
Love the one of you with the monkey...too cute.
the photo of the hand reaching out and touching the goat is a prize winner. Elderly hands make terrific photos.

Thanks for the photo tribute to this celebration, Sandra. Sadly, many people may not be able to visit a zoo now and sad for the animals as well.

MS what a wonderful flashback Post. I heard recently many Zoos could possibly be in financial situations too. No visitors no revenue...and the animal care and feeding didn't stop when the visitors stopped coming

Animals have a way of stirring up some life in the elderly.
