Power Outage 1

Christmas Eve we had a thunder storm, lightning, thunder and winds to 50 miles per hour!
Boom! Flash! Bang!
We went to bed, our normal time. As soon as we laid down
Power went out! Came back on! OUT and gone!
IT WAS DARK!
Wow was it dark? the kind you can't see hand in front of face dark!
Some of you know I am afraid of the dark and every room in the house has its own nightlight.
Plus our neighbors had a flood light on the side of their house and Christmas lights that
keep the outside nice and bright.
I could not even see the outline of the window and the wind was howling like a banshee!
Have you ever heard a banshee? Me either, but it was whipping those trees like crazy.
Despite the dark and windy, I managed to go to sleep
and when we woke up the next morning
the power was on 3:30 am check of email, had received the above 3 emails during the night from FPL our power company.

1st ..They warned it was out, effecting 1536 homes in our neighborhood and back on by 9:15 promise
2nd...Let us know the restoration specialist was in our neighborhood investigating
3rd An hour later the email said your power is own, let us know if yours is not.
Have any of you had this type notification?

this is the first time for this and I like it.. and the fast service.  I could have told there special investigator (power repair guy) no need to investigate, the pole next door blew a transformer..
Wish I and been awake to take photos of them replacing it.
it did cause a little early morning chaos..............to be continued

No, we’ve never gotten notifications like that either. Our power doesn’t go out often, but I have a large collection of flashlights to use when it does. I can find them in the dark if need be.

we never get warnings or informations... but it happens mostly at night here... we see it when all things with a clock show a weird time...

Yep, I get them all the time for all catastrophes from the city and power companies and oil refineries, etc. (as a text message.) Here, they call them Reverse alerts or something like that. But, I signed up for these long ago. One, tho, I disabled was Amber Alert.

Hello,

I do remember getting emails from our power company. I am glad they had the power back on and all was well. I assume your phone was getting the emails? It is nice to be notified of their progress.
Have a great day!

Nope, no emails here when the power goes out. We've all checked their website though to see what the cause is and when it's expected to come back on. If it weren't for cell phones and being able to access the internet with them it would seem rather funny that they are sending an email during a power outage.

It was nice that the power company sent the emails, but I was wondering how folks could read them in a power outage? Glad to read you didn’t have any serious damages, Sandra, after reading your description of that storm. I prefer a good snowstorm myself, but sadly none here, yet.

Oh dear me I agree power outage is scary when it is so sudden like that in the night. We keep flashlights by the bed but still scary.
When we report an outage it is via cell phone and they offer to send a text or give a call back when it is back on.
Happy Monday

Great customer service, those notifications! Nope, I've never had anything like that. Sure is disconcerting when that happens, tho. I'm always on edge, like the boogie-man is just outside, waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

Laughing about your reference to a banshee. Sure, I've said that but never heard one either.

Nope, I've never received those notifications before either. I'm glad you were able to sleep through the outage. You should get one of the little mini battery powered camping lanterns from Walmart for those times, especially if you're afraid of the dark. I have a big one and a couple of the little ones, they weren't expensive.

My power company texts me whenever there is likely to be the kind of weather that might affect power supply - and provide an emergency number to call if outage happens. This is because they have me on their 'vulnerable' list; someone of a certain age with rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. Not sure all customers would get that service. We are also advised when there are planned works that might interrupt flow. YAM xx

No, we have not received the email alerts...I wish we did. Till I would know that they know about the outage.

We have gotten a few alerts here too. Mostly by text, especially when we were in the midst of all the firestorms.
The power company turned off massive areas in vulnerable places where there was the threat of fire. It was awful. We never were without power but my friend who live closer to the mountains didn't have an emergency generator and lost all of her food in the freezer twice. Very costly saftey measure. At least the weather was warm so people didn't freeze.
Sandra, I'm amazed you went to sleep!
How does Beau react?
Big Boy would have been a basket case I think.

Why is it that the power usually goes out at night AND when it is cold??? Inquiring minds want to know.

Wow!! What an exciting Christmas Eve!! Our electric company texts us when the power goes out, and when they think it will be restored.

Oh my, that wasn't fun at all! I keep nightlights throughout the house too.

I don't ever remember getting these notifications. I'm a stickler for keeping lights within easy reach. I have two camping lamps - never went camping here - they come in useful at such times. Fortunately we don't get too many of them. If we have any during the night, thankfully we sleep through them most of the time and only have the flashing clocks to let us know what happened.
